I think for all its economic weaknesses, Communism, or Socialism as a political movement is making a comeback. Look at Russia. Putin has successfully made a power-grab and corruption and political and social ineptness has turned many Russian former-socialists into former free-market reformers. Chavez in Venezuela, and Castro in Cuba continue to enjoy public support and both are sitting on billions in untapped oil to fund their future Utopian dreams (if they aren't assassinated). China is the largest socialist country in the world, and thanks to W, is rapidly buying America's assets and funding a increasing amount of our debt. It's almost as if the Socialist have learned to adapt economically, and beat America at its own capitalist game.

China is an interesting model from a sociological perspective. They certainly are maintaining their communist government, but they are shifting towards a capitalist economy. It will be interesting to see how it turns out if from nothing more than a academic perspective.
