This would make a lot of sense if the Spurs had some deal in place to get Al Jefferson using Jax's expiring contract.
They've had plenty of chances to bring him into the mix in the past. The Spurs have brought him in for workouts on a few occasions. For whatever reasons, they never pulled the trigger.
If the T'Wolves don't sign him for the season after this second ten-day contract and the Spurs open up a roster spot, he makes a lot of sense. With Jackson struggling, the Spurs could use Gelabale for depth at small forward. That's especially true if the Spurs believe they'll end up trading Jackson at the trade deadline.

A Minnesota reporter asked Pop if the Spurs ever had interest in Gelabale and he said they have had some interest in the past few years but never had room. It was nothing.
