Black History Month Person of the Day for Sunday, February 10, 2013 is
    Hubert "Geese" Ausbie.

Hubert Eugene "Geese" Ausbie (born 25 April 1938) was born in Crescent, Oklahoma. He played basketball at Philander Smith College in Little Rock, Arkansas, where he earned All-Conference and All-American honors. Ausbie was one of the leading college scorers in the NCAA's College Division. Ausbie was offered contracts by Major League Baseball and National Basketball Association teams. He joined the Harlem Globetrotters after his wife sent numerous letters describing his play to Abe Saperstein, the team's founder. Ausbie remained the team's cornerstone for the next 23 years, participating in more than 6,000 basketball games in more than 100 countries. After the retirement of Meadowlark Lemon, Ausbie took his place as the "Clown Prince of Basketball" for his dazzling play and irrepressible pranks on the court.

Mr. Ausbie's most notable present-day accomplishment is the Drug-Free Youth Program & Traveling Museum Showcase (a collection of Globetrotter-related memorabilia) which he has presented to hundreds of students at all grade levels in Arkansas and other states.

Mr. Ausbie has received awards from Big Brothers, The Jerry Lewis Foundation, Special Olympics, and numerous other organizations. Two scholarships have been established in his name. Currently he serves on the advisory committee for the National Youth Sports Program. He is a Mason and a deacon at Greater Archview Baptist Church. Married for 25 years to his college sweetheart, Awilda, he has four children and two grandchildren.

Although Mr. Ausbie and sports have been good to each other, he has stressed to his children that "there is no subs ute for education ". His philosophy" "Church first, then school, and if you're good enough at sports--it'll come."

Mr. Ausbie is old enough to be my dad. I was born not far from his home and also grew up nearby. He was always my favorite Globetrotter and as the article states, is a wonderful example for young people. Congratulations Geese and thank you.
