dont really get the need for this change from a basketball stand point
it really just seems to be about gaining viewship/money meaning stern got his fingerprints on it

+ Trust Sources: NBA Summer League in Las Vegas is adopting an NCAA-tournament elimination style format that will crown a
definitive champion. Every team will be guaranteed a minimum of five games, per usual, but only three will have a scheduled opponent. The teams with the top three-game results will be then given a one-game bye and the remaining teams will square off, the winners advancing to play the top-seeded teams. After all that, the top eight teams will then pair off, the winners advancing to play in the semifinals; the semifinal winners will then play one game for the Summer League championship. Teams reaching the finals will play a total of eight games. If teams choose to use the summer strictly for player development, they'll certainly have that chance; but teams looking to test prospective future head coaches or see how players respond to the pressure of elimination running their system will get that. It also will provide some compelling basketball for broadcast at a time of the year when hoops TV is a little barren.

It also gives them an excuse to charge $50 for the Summer League Package, tbh...

I like it, doesn't mean jack but could mean the games are a bit more exciting I guess. Hopefully Nando, CoJo and Baynes can just go and dominate.
Meh. Summer league scrubs are summer league scrubs. Changing formats won't change that.
Ric Bucher has had some horrible takes lately. First, it was "the economical crisis will reduce the amount of new international players", and now, it's "the new summer league format will create pressure situations that will help evaluating players and coaches". Both claims are just laughable.
About the format change, the new format seems to be an upgrade but it won't really have a significant impact. Summer league won't be really changed by it. I guess it will allow the NBA to draw more viewers on NBA TV for the SL final.

NEW YORK – Twenty-two teams, including squads featuring eight of the top 10 selections in the 2013 NBA Draft, will vie for a championship– televised live on NBA TV – at NBA Summer League 2013 in Las Vegas at the Thomas & Mack Center and COX Pavilion on the campus of the University of Nevada Las Vegas, the NBA announced today.
From July 12-22, 21 NBA teams and a team of NBA D-League Select players will compete for the inaugural NBA Summer League le. This year’s field includes 11 of this season’s NBA Playoff teams, along with 10 non-playoff teams, including the Cleveland Cavaliers and Washington Wizards, participants in every NBA Summer League in Las Vegas since the league’s inception in 2004. The Cavaliers and Wizards will select first and third, respectively, in the 2013 NBA Draft, which will be held in Brooklyn at Barclays Center on Thursday, June 27, 2013.
The ninth NBA Summer League in Las Vegas tips off on Friday, July 12, and will conclude with a championship game on Monday, July 22. All participating teams will play a minimum of five games. After the conclusion of games on July 16, all teams will have completed three games and will be seeded for single-elimination tournament play that will lead to a champion being crowned on July 22.
