All-Star point guard Tony Parker is active and available for Friday’s home game against Utah, the Spurs announced at shootaround. He is officially listed as probable.
“He looked pretty good,” Kawhi Leonard said after shootaround. “He said he doesn’t feel any pain in his ankle. I’m happy and excited for him to play tonight.”
Should Parker see action, he will have missed exactly three weeks with a sprained left ankle. Parker was injured against Sacramento on March 1. He had been initially expected to miss a month.
The Spurs are 6-2 in his absence, but have shown slippage on both ends of the court without him. Parker, a likely MVP candidate, is averaging 21.0 points and 7.6 assists in what might be his best overall season.
Parker’s return couldn’t come at a better time. Sunday’s road game at Houston kicks off a brutal stretch in which they’ll play five straight playoff teams, including defending champion Miami on March 31.
“Now we must prepare for the playoffs,” backup Nando De Colo said, “so it’s very good for us.”
The Spurs (52-16) boast a 2.5 game lead over Oklahoma City (50-19) in the Western Conference. They trail the Heat by 1.5 games in the standings and two in the loss column for the league’s best overall record.
