The truth is he was not the first black to play in the major leagues, no not talking about the negro leagues either. Who can tell me who really was the first?
Like all movies based on real life how many of the facts will be either ignored or distorted? Jackie wasn't even the fastest member of his family, that was Mack his older brother who chased Jesse Owens to a medal at the 36 Berlin Olympics.
Jackie was a great long jumper, actually led the nation for JC athletes while at Pasadena City with a 25-10 leap. Then off to UCLA where he starred in football and the long jump, he had good speed not world class speed like his brother.
Too bad guys like Josh Gibson and Cool Papa Bell never played in the major leagues. Gibson was hitting 70 or more homeruns in a season and Cool Papa was said to be so fast he once hit a grounder between first and second and had to jump over the ball rounding first for second.
Have yet to see any movie about a sports hero where they actually got it right.
Remember.."Chariots of Fire"..? They totally ignored the beat down Harold Abrahams took from USA high schooler Francis Hussey on that lead off leg in the 4x1. Hussey destroyed the Olympic 100m champ, gave the USA a two meter lead, which is what they won by.
Speaking of athletic brothers,...
One was an Olympic gold medalist, the other is in the NFL Hall of Fame, who?

How do you know what ..no one....thinks? There are tons of baseball fans ya know.
I'm not a baseball fan but know about Robinson. And ya can't know about his story and know that stuff I mentioned above.

I don't think the white man is guilty at all. And there are millions of blacks who need to be thankful things were like they were.

Most everyone I know knows that Jackie wasn't the true first but he got the fame and did very, very well with it. This a movie remember and some things will be changed, omitted for effect. If you want a do entary watch PBS.
What would all those 4.3 guys do in Nigeria? Denzel? Wesley? Samuel L?

I got into Robinson because of his track and football exploits long ago. Then to find out his older brother was Mack Robinson who was a real stud at Oregon State, well.
Now add this marvelous book I own...Black American Sports Heroes.... featuring the art of George Lee. Obviously Jackie Robinson is there. As is the former slave who fought for the heavyweight le. Tons of great stuff.
Being a fan of black history in sport, you will come across those old negro leagues, very very interesting. As was the black basketball leagues. You also discovery the first black athlete to do this or that. Would you believe back in the day the local papers would...
NEGRO SETS RECORD...then precede to explain who what and where.

In the end it doesn't matter as Jackie Robinson is the one celebrated and the message was clearly sent.
You might like to deal in misinformation, I don't. There is just something about reality/facts that appeals to me. What gets me is why not go with what actually went down instead of a lie?
While not a lie it is a bit of interesting historical fact.
Yes Jesse Owens won 4 gold medals at the 36 Berlin Olympics. Everyone has heard of Jesse Owens. What gets lost is that he wasn't our best 100m man, that was Temples Eulace Pea who had beaten Jesse 7 of 10 times at that distance, he also beat him in the long jump, being a 26 footer also. Due to an injury early in 36 at the Penn Relays, no Olympic trials for Pea . It's realistic to say if he'd been in Berlin he wins the 100, takes second in the long jump and runs on that gold medal 4x1 team, he wasn't a 200 guy. Mack Robinson should have been in that 4x1 (great turn runner), no telling what the team of....

...would have ran. Yep, histories first great all black 4x1 team. Can't ignore Columbia's Ben Johnson who also had beaten Owens and was also hurt in 36.
