    FCP: Free agent talks begin
    TSN.ca Staff

    7/7/2005 2:17:49 PM

NBA teams cannot sign free agents until at least July 22, under terms of the just-completed collective bargaining agreement, but that hasn't slowed down the off-season talk. Plenty of big names are expected to move around in another busy summer.

    AROUND THE ASSOCIATION
    - The Dallas Morning News reports that the Mavericks are looking to deal SG Michael Finley to a team in the East. Finley also might be waived, under a new clause in the collective bargaining agreement that would save the Mavs luxury tax payments.

    - Re-signing C Zydrunas Ilgauskas is the Cavaliers' top priority according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Step number two is adding a perimeter threat like Michael Redd, Ray Allen or Bobby Simmons. Ilgauskas has been in the sights of the Atlanta Hawks, according to the Akron Beacon Journal.

    - The Los Angeles Lakers are targeting Antonio Daniels to help shore up their point guard situation, and the Toronto Star reports that the Raptors have also contacted Daniels.

    - Reports out of Denver indicate that the Nuggets are interested in Kings free agent SG Cuttino Mobley, with PF/C Nene mentioned as a possible part of a sign-and-trade swap.

    - The Rocky Mountain News also has the Nuggets possibly interested in SG Latrell Sprewell.

    - The Knicks are desperate for size, according to the New York Times, and everyone else. Kwame Brown, Antoine Walker, Stromile Swift and Samuel Dalembert were all mentioned as objects of Isiah's affection.

    - Stromile Swift is being pursued by the Rockets, according to the Houston Chronicle.

    - According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the Bulls are interested in bringing PF Donyell Marshall back to the Windy City.

    - The Deseret Morning News reports that the Jazz may be pursuing Suns C Steven Hunter, Clippers C Mikki Moore with guards Dan au and Willie Green also on the radar.

    - Willie Green may also be getting some interest from the Cavaliers, according to the Willoughby News-Herald.

    - Several teams, including the Indianapolis Pacers, are pursuing Lithuanian PG Sarunas Jasikevicius. The Akron Beacon Journal reports the Cavaliers could have the inside track, especially if they re-sign Lithuanian C Zydrunas Ilgauskas.

    - Larry Hughes could be interested in Cleveland, after a disappointing start to negotiations in Washington, according to the Akron Beacon Journal.

    - The Long Beach Press-Telegram reports that the Clippers are interested in Larry Hughes or Cuttino Mobley to start at shooting guard.

    - According to the several reports out of New York, the Knicks could be shopping PF Mike Sweetney and/or PG Stephon Marbury. Isiah Thomas acted quickly to vehemently dispell the Marbury rumours. Sweetney could be used in a sign-and-trade to acquire Kwame Brown from Washington.

    - PF Antoine Walker is getting some interest from the Houston Rockets, according to several reports, while the Rockets also are receiving interest from the likes of Bobby Simmons, Stromile Swift and Donyell Marshall, according to the Houston Chronicle.

    - The Baton Rouge Advocate reports that the Hornets are looking for a small forward, possibly including Bobby Simmons.

    - Reports out of Chicago have the Bulls intending to match offers for any of their free agents, including young big men Eddy Curry and Tyson Chandler. However, the Arlington Heights Daily Herald reports that health issues could lead the Bulls to part with Curry in a sign-and-trade deal.

    - The Nets are pursuing PG Keyon Dooling and PF Shareef Abdur-Rahim, while the Orlando Sentinel has the Magic going after Abdur-Rahim or Udonis Haslem.

    - The Atlanta Hawks and Cleveland Cavaliers are pursuing Bulls C Eddy Curry, according to the Chicago Tribune.

    - The Chicago Tribune reports that the Bulls and Celtics have discussed a sign-and-trade deal that would see PF Antoine Walker go to his home town of Chicago in exchange for PF Antonio Davis.

    - The East Valley Tribune reports that Suns second-round pick Dijon Thompson is a lock to make the team.

    - SG Ray Allen is reportedly returning to the Seattle Supersonics and SG Raja Bell sounds like he's headed to Phoenix, while SF Brian Scalabrine is reportedly on the way to Boston. Michael Redd may return to Milwaukee, but Cleveland continues to make an aggressive pitch in order to get Redd to return to Ohio.

    - PF Robert Horry will return to the Spurs for three years, according to reports out of San Antonio and Miami, where the Heat had been expressing interest in Big Shot Bob. Heat PF Udonis Haslem has indicated that he will take less money than he would sign for on the open market in order to stay in Miami.

I heard that Scalabrine got a 5-year, $15M contract from the Celtics. That's a lot for a scrub power forward who shoots under 40% for his career.

would you trade scola straight up for hughes?
Of course. Hughes would have been an All-Star if he didn't get injured. Wasn't he also All-Defense first team?

    It'd be a no-brainer.

larry hughes is deceptively athletic and has very long arms, he's a soldier, although injury prone.

he is a proven scorer in the nba.

so trading scola for him is indeed a no brainer.

Scalabrine or Robert Swift? Theres a brainer.

Henderson didn't have license, New York permit
    Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Dallas Mavericks free agent Alan Henderson was arrested and charged with carrying a gun in his luggage while trying to board a flight over the weekend.

The 32-year-old Henderson was released without bail Sunday, a day after his arrest at John F. Kennedy International Airport, a spokesman for the Queens County Criminal Court said.

Henderson had a loaded 9 mm pistol stored in a metal lock box inside his suitcase, said Patrick Clark, a spokesman for the Queens District Attorney's office. Clark said Henderson was stopped by airport officials when he acknowledged he didn't have a valid New York permit or a license for the weapon.

Henderson is charged with second- and third-degree counts of criminal possession of a weapon. His court date is set for Aug. 25. If convicted, Henderson could face 15 years in prison.

A message seeking comment was left Thursday for Henderson's agent, Bill Strickland.

Henderson, a 6-foot-9 forward, was a first-round pick by Atlanta in 1995 and has played 10 NBA seasons. He is an unrestricted free agent after averaging 3.5 points and 4.5 rebounds a game for Dallas last season.

They wouldn't trade Hughes for Scola, but that would be a great pick up for the Spurs.

Hughes has been really underrated this offseason. I would choose him over Ray Allen anyday.

Why are we talking about trading Scola for Hughes? It's obviously an idiotic question.
