Was trying to get a gauge of the newspapers in SA. I realize the EN is the only business in town when it comes to an all around type of paper. Is there room for another? Do people who read the paper do so because of a tradition? Nastalgia? Because they feel that has the best news for local? Or because they are the only game in town?
Does anybody read the Community Impact News in Austin? Could there be a market in SA and S Texas for that kind of paper?

I know print is kind of thought of as going extinct but I don't think so. I think there will always be a newpaper. Atleast for 50 more years. No real data. I remember reading EN and just how crappy it was all together. Then I read something about the EN withholding a story for the mayor and helping the mayor attack some District Counsel person. I just wish there was a SA news org who focused on going after the politicians. We all know S Texas political machines from both parties could put Chicago to shame! Anyone else thought this or feel this way?

newspapers all over are struggling, bleeding to death, among them bastions like NY Times and Wash Po.

are you talking about physical paper or online only publication?

what would the revenue model be? Huff Po was accepting free articles, then screwed the writers when Ariana sold it for $300M.

news gathering, labor intensive, is expensive.

    the key question is revenue
On April 2, 2007, Chicago-based investor Sam Zell announced plans to buy out the media company for $34.00 a share, totalling $8.2 billion.[3] Zell's intentions were to turn the company private. The deal was approved by 97% of the Company's shareholders on August 21, 2007.[4] Privatization of the Tribune Company occurred on December 20, 2007 with termination of trading in Tribune stock at the close of the market.[5]
I think there is money that can be made. Maybe not like the 80's and 90's. The amount they make now might become the normal

the trend is (and has been) converging newspapers

so SA used to have the Light also but now just E-N

Hearst owns the E-N and the Houston Chronicle and they share a lot of stuff already

it takes a lot of upfront capital to do a full-blown daily newspaper
Yeah I remember the EN whenever involved in national news was just a NYT or LAT article copied and pasted. I think a better brand like USA Today (gannett) could fund a np co. in SA to compete with EN. They would ultimately have to do the same thing with national news

when's the last time someone started a true daily newspaper in a major city?
USA today was started in the mid 80s. The Austin paper I referenced earlier was started in 05.

Asking if there's a market for print newspapers is similar to asking if there's a market for house phones.

Probably more of a market for home phones, imo.

Most newspapers are reluctant to use the pay models used on line and try to do things like paid registration and the like. You can see the fruit of their labors.

I have a tab and I just pay to get the several I read received there. Highly recommend the medium.
