    Two Questions:

    1. What was the name of the team before it was changed to "SPURS"?

    and

    2. Did the initial "owners" actually own the team or did they lease it from other investors / owners?

    1. The Dallas Chaparrals, before they changed it to the Texas Chaparrals, and finally the Spurs when they moved to San Antonio.

    2. Don't have a clue! but I think they leased it

    Looks like someone read the Sports Illustrated Championship edition for the Spurs.
    I like how they originally recruited drunken maniacs to be baseline bums.

    Getting back to the Spurs...

    Actually San Antonio leased the Dallas franchise on a 3-year lease and if San Antonio decided not to buy it, it would revert back to Dallas as the original owner. The rest is history.
