If anyone of the old guys can answer this for my curiosity, I'd appreciate it. Were there any politics or racial issues behind the ABA? Just considering the time period, I have to ask was any of the reason for having an ABA motivated by giving black players a league to shine in against a still majority white NBA? Or was it more of just different cities wanting to have a team but not able to get NBA charters?

I think it was a way to attract black players and let them do their thing and not be controlled by the NBA. It was afros vs short hair, mink coats vs two piece suits, etc.....the ABA owners had to be creative in every sense to even have a hope of survival.
