The players just seem happy to be there but I'm sure they'll be locked in after tip off.

SPURS COACH POPOVICH ON MEDIA DAY

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich sends reporters to dictionary

During his Wednesday news conference in advance of Game 1 against the Miami Heat on Thursday, Popovich uttered these words: consummate, muddles, neophyte, proliferation, formulae and copacetic.

    No surprise.

Popovich graduated from the Air Force Academy where he majored in Soviet studies, is a literary enthusiast, a raconteur and wine connoisseur – a renaissance man infiltrating the world of pro sports.

So, here is Popovich using those words in a sentence:

On Tim Duncan: "Timmy, he's a consummate pro."

On preparing for LeBron James possibly guarding Tony Parker: "Whatever is presented is what has to be dealt with. But ahead of time, to think of 50 different scenarios, I think muddles the mind a little bit too much. It's a basketball game, go play it and see what you've got."

On James' game on 2007 when the Cleveland Cavaliers played the Spurs in the Finals: "That was like ancient history. He was basically a neophyte at the time, wondering how all this stuff worked and how it's put together."

On the increased presence of advanced stats in today's NBA: "I think today we've had a proliferation of geniuses who have come up with new formulae to prove what wins and what loses. … So everything being copacetic, maybe shots and making stops on demand wins a lot of games."
