And despite being well known and coveted thanks to his stellar international play for Argentina, Ginobili fell to the second round in 1999 and didn't come to the NBA for another three seasons. ''Ginobili that was a pick that a lot of people knew was going to be good,'' Timberwolves president of basketball operations Flip Saunders said. ''It's just at the time a lot of people didn't want to wait for him.''
Wait, what? I've never heard anything other than that back in '99, nobody knew who the he was. Revisionist history?

If he had any clue about how good Manu was back then, he would have waited a decade.

I liked the point about several Spurs players having camraderie by having taken the hard road to the NBA. The one-and-done players might just create a negative culture because they have that sense of en lement.

He's full of it. Only about two teams had anything resembling extensive European league scouting at that time, San Antonio and Dallas. No one else had anything for years.

Lol Flip. Knew Manu would be good, didn't want to wait, so drafted Louis Bullock at #42 and traded him immediately for cash.

HOUSTON — On the night back in 1999 the Spurs made him the 57th pick in the NBA draft, Manu Ginobili was preparing for a game in the middle of the Brazilian Amazon, in a place so remote, it was accessible only by boat or airplane.

He didn't even realize it was draft night.
“I had checked all the mock drafts, and none of them had me going anywhere,” Ginobili recalled. “So I forgot all about it.”

Expounding on one of the more interesting revelations from his recent “Ask Me Anything” Q&A on Reddit.com before Sunday's 96-95 loss in Houston, Ginobili said he still remembered the disbelief of being drafted.
The Spurs were a few days removed from winning their first NBA championship. Ginobili was a player still on the fringes of the league's scouting radar.

“Someone woke me up in the middle of the night to tell me,” Ginobili said. “I said, 'They're the defending NBA champions? Are you sure?' I had no idea they were even looking at me.”
In his 11th season, and a key component of three more Spurs le teams, Ginobili has gone down as one of the greatest draft steals in league history.

As Ginobili can attest, it didn't feel that way at the time.

So glad the Spurs decided to trade Giricek instead of Ginobili. Gordan had "jumper's knee" and the Spurs took care of him and rehabbed him... without having signed him. By 2002, RC and Pop calculated that they wouldn't be able to sign both Giricek and Ginobili. They decided to trade Gordan to Memphis for a future 2nd rounder a few months prior to the World Championships in Indy. Then, a couple of weeks later (July), the Spurs signed Ginobili. By the time September rolled around and everyone saw Ginobili playing in the WCs, Pop and RC were thrilled they had drafted and kept Manu.

Do the Spurs still have the rights to Lorbek? If so, you think he makes the transition to the NBA should the Spurs win the Finals?

Exactly!! How many 2ND ROUND picks pan out in the NBA. HARDLY ANY!!! If you knew the guy was going to be this good at the time, Every team would have drafted Manu after the 1st round without question. He would have gone with the 1st in the 2nd round, if not the the late 1st round stages.
