This thread is created not to bash on Kobe but to discuss the Lakers current situation. If the decision is placed on your hand, would you amnesty him? If Dwight bolts, Lakers are left with a core of Gasol, Kobe and Nash, that's $60 million. If Kobe comes back to play, he'll definitely push the Lakers to a post season berth, but is this really what they need? I'd imagine, a lottery pick and saving luxury tax on a lost season seems like a better idea if you ask me.

They can have a lottery pick next year which is a perfect opportunity to draft Wiggins, a huge cap space and save a large tax bill this season. That's about as good as it gets. The Lakers must move forward without Kobe. He was great for them but his legacy with that franchise is over. Jim Buss also made it clear. D'Antoni is staying. How does that even fit this picture? The Lakers are full of old players, at least the ones that really mattered.

Another issue is Kobe's presence and hold of the team. As long as he's with the Lakers, it will always be under his wing which is not necessarily a good thing considering he's 35. The 2014 Free Agent pool are full of players who are not necessarily fond playing second fiddle to Kobe.

Other than loyalty, what logical reason(s) if any, does one have in wanting Kobe to stay with the franchise?

No they aren't going to contend any time soon u might as well keep him and the money he makes for your franchise for a few years.

Lakers fans will love watching Kobe chase the career points record, the franchise will still make money n then he can retire with their management still being on good terms wit the fans.

Pretty much this. Especially if Dwight bolts, than the Lakers could handle the tax penalties with his contract off the books.

When Dwight walks, Lakers have a huge cap space to pursue other players in the free agency pool. I think they're still good enough to reach the playoffs, but the years of contending are over.

    Why amnesty him when

    a) LA is not gonna contend this year anyway
    b) Their cap room is gonna be wider than a hooker's legs in the summer of 2014

Not as ed as you were last Thursday nite. You had 5. And had to give it back to the Heat. Just like that.

Lakers would be able to save about 30m from tax (assuming the threshold will be reached) by amnestying him, so it wouldn't be a bad choice for them lakers, but it would certainly be a severe hit to his ego. If I were Kobe I would rather retire right away than get amnestied by my team, especially when he's out indefinitely with injury.

Not really sure Kobe Billups g'on lead them to the playoffs. He needed that 50FT gift from Benny Adams to do it this season before The Achilles. Don't really see the point of paying him $30 million and then paying Stern another $30 million to have him play out his Willie Mays on the Mets year.

Since The Achilles, it stands to reason that Kobe will need more FTs to make the postseason this season. How much higher you think Adam Silver can push it? Stern got him to 50FTA that historic night, but maybe 75 will be needed that night next April?
