Because scoring a touchdown in a professional football game is a fairly routine achievement, and because NFL teams are comprised of delicate flowers whose sensibilities are as easily upset as a dandelion in the spring breeze, the NFL has decided to crack down still further on post-touchdown celebrations. Oh, come on.
Alas, it's true, per Pro Football Talk: officials at both the Vikings and Panthers camps are warning players that refs will crack down further on celebrations where players "spin" the ball. For those of you not familiar with the NFL's arcane jargon, "spinning" is where the player swiftly twists and then releases the ball, point downward, so that the ball rotates rapidly on its end. Apparently it's something the kids are doing these days because it causes intense outrage, or something.
As PFT notes, a variety of celebratory acts are no longer permissible and will result in a penalty: “These acts include but are not limited to: sack dances; home run swing; incredible hulk; ing the ball; throwing or shoving the ball; pointing; pointing the ball; verbal taunting; military salute; standing over an opponent (prolonged and with provocation; or dancing.” In other words: ANY KIND OF DEMONSTRATION OF ANYTHING RESEMBLING A HUMAN EMOTION. Somebody needs to loop all of these together in one single monstrous celebration. It'd be worth the 15 yards, easy.

Well, tbh, if NFL fans really cared they would hit him where it hurts. Unfortunately, the NFL will still be wildly popular.

Reports today from members of the media at Vikings camp and Panthers camp indicate that referees working training camps are warning players that they’ll be penalized if they taunt opponents by spinning the ball.

This is not a new rule: The 2012 official playing rules listed examples of prohibited acts that will result in unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, saying, “These acts include but are not limited to: sack dances; home run swing; incredible hulk; ing the ball; throwing or shoving the ball; pointing; pointing the ball; verbal taunting; military salute; standing over an opponent (prolonged and with provocation; or dancing.”

But the fact that officials at two different training camps made a specific point of mentioning spinning the ball suggests that officials will be stricter about enforcing that rule this year than they were last year.

One player, Panthers receiver Steve Smith, even said he’s working on ways to continue his ball-spinning celebrations while staying within the rules. Smith, and every other NFL player, would be wise to err on the side of caution. Players may enjoy spinning the ball to celebrate, but no celebration is worth 15 yards.

Seems like you just can't do it in a taunting fashion....still this is bad news for a Stevie Johnson fan. Dude spins the ball after almost every first down and touch down.

Probably the most asinine rule I've ever heard.

That's the problem you have when these old farts, who never played in big leagues, are left in charge.

Because football definitely isn't an emotional game where no testosterone is involved at all.

It would be one thing if players scored a touchdown and felt the need to rape a cheerleader or shoot a gun at someone in the stands but spinning the football?

Another thing: the refs don't need ANOTHER rule to selectively enforce.... when one of the league's favorites (the Steelers come to mind) is losing, look for the celebration penalties to be pulled out if the other team so much as twitches

Clipper Nation has to be the most annoying poster on the site.

Not a good annoying, but the second grader who just makes fart noises all class and when somebody points out his stupidity/lack of originality he just says "I know you are but what am I!!!" type annoying.

Let's be sure to also ban high fives, fist pumps, helmet pats, yelling, jumping for joy, beer at games, Lambeau Leap, e football, Rogers Championship Belt celebration, dirty bird, and anything else that may be construed as celabratory.

Just fine each of the perps who do this. The fact that ing or celebrating could affect the outcome of a game is appalling.
