what exactly is eye opening about this stuff? Cities have been subsidizing billionaire owners in every sport since the 1980s. All it takes a hint of deductive reasoning to realize your tax dollars are what's making professional sports such a lucrative industry. Fortunately for those sports teams that hint amount of deductive reasoning is more than most Americans have because their too busy watching the sports teams and thumping their bible.
I knew a little but I guess I didn't know the full extent. Putting the actual dollar amounts to it made it quite a bit more tangible.
Yeah, it's pretty ridiculous. You'll notice how much the "why your team sucks" series on Deadspin focused on this dark side of football... Owners are regularly ting on the population whenever they can.

It's not just the NFL, it's all of pro sports where this goes on. If you think the stuff that article points out is bad, you should see how much Miami tax payers got fleeced by the Marlins and their bull promise about how $1.2 billion towards a new stadium would get them a compe ive ball club and also how much the Marlins were caught outright lying about profitability when their financials got leaked.You and I both know it's not just jeebo s who don't pay attention to the financial side of things

I really don't disagree with anything you're saying, and confess that I don't know as much about the $$ side of pro sports as a financial guy like you do, but to only blame jeebo s is misguided. What about all the dumb nigs and mexicans in the inner cities who vote for Dems? What about all the enlightened lib s on both coasts who allow their favorite teams to rape them? And Seattle didn't allow its team to rape it, which is why its pro basketball team left for a ball red state city. Also look at the article in the OP. Santa Clara made a deal with the 49ers that involved all the money being paid back over the long term. Still a corporate blowjob, but nothing compared to like which Oklahoma City did to get the Sonics. The big coastal cities, regardless of political affiliations, don't need to give as many subsidies away because teams would rather be there everything else equal. The cities like Minneapolis and OKC are the ones that really get bent over.
I'm also not just boiling it down to jeebo s. I'm boiling it down to the anti-intellectual culture in this country created by religion that trickles down to everyone regardless of how religious they actually are.
And there's a lot of outrage in Florida over what's going on with the Marlins. For example this current movement in Texas to incorporate a "science" curriculum in public schools that teaches kids the world is 5,000 years old. Kids being taught the world is 5,000 years old before they know any better dumbs them down regardless of how religious they turn out to be.
