When the old AFL first came into existence in 1960, they had 8 teams
East
Boston Patriots
New York ans (New York Jets)
Houston Oilers
Buffalo Bills
West
Los Angeles Chargers
Dallas Texans (KC Chiefs)
Oakland Raiders
Denver Broncos
First "star" of the league was Texan running back Abner Haynes out of North Texas State, he was a speedy dual purpose guy.
The NFL looked like this in 1960, 14 teams
East
New York Giants
Pittsburgh Steelers..terrible
Washington Redskins
Cleveland Browns
Philadephia Eagles...former AAFL
Dallas Cowboys...first season
St. Louis Cardinals
West
Chicago Bears
Detroit Lions
Minnesota Vikings...first season
Baltimore Colts
Green Bay Packers
San Francisco 49ers...former AAFL
Los Angeles Rams
Jim Brown the main man.

After Superbowl IV and the AFL had won the last two the NFL got nervous so...merger. Coming over from the NFL to the now AFC came the...Steelers, Colts and Browns. Obviously giving each conference 11 teams.
The reason the AFL succeeded was due to the fact they searched out small school/HBCU players. When the Jets beat the Colts in SBIII the Colts has two sluggish white cats in the backfield in Tom Matte and Jerry Hill while the Jets had big Matt Snell and speedy Emerson Boozer out of Maryland Eastern Shore. Namaths favorite receiver was white lightnin' Don Maynard out of Texas Western. That Jets D loaded with small school/black players. The AFL was the faster league. We'd see that again when the Chiefs beat the Vikings in SB IV. The star of the gams big and fast Otis Taylor out of Prairie View.
The first AFL 1000 yard rusher was a guy who had never played college football, he went straight from HS to the CFL. He'd end up a Buffalo Bills and dominate the league for a few seasons (loose cannon) his name...Carlton "Cookie" Cilchrist. A guy who would have got no shot in the NFL, a 250 pound fullback with speed.
