krokodil is a simple opiate, the eaten flesh is due to the fact that said opiate is impure. Iodine and red phosphorous at the injection site are what causes the skin deterioration.

It is quite a disturbing drug and the dealers should face more severe charges than what a heroin dealer faces. I am not surprised it showed up in Chicago, considering the demographics - I wonder if other cesspools like Detroit have seem this drug being sold.
