The significance of bigs has considerably reduced in recent years I think that's why the Heat have won 3 consecutive les without even a quality big, let alone a dominant one, and I don't see how today's heat would defeat the 00-02 Lakers with a Prime Shaq and Kobe being his sidekick.
I think the comparison between Bron and Kobe when neither of them was in championship-winning mode would explain it better imho, like in the mid 2000s when Bron and Kobe had basically the same level of support casts- nothing but role players. Lebron managed to make the finals once, made the conference finals multiple times while Kobe failed to get past even the 1st round during the same era, not to say that year when he didn't even make the playoffs.
and the East wasn't really that weak compared to the west back then imho. The Heat were a championship contender and the pistons were still competing too; the Nets still had triple all-stars on their squad with the wizards and Magic emerging as compe ors. While even a ty franchise like the Rockets could clinch a top4 seed in the west.
