You have to wonder how Rome was an unquestioned hegemony for half a millennium seeing how they all over his god before and after Jesus. Things only started going bad when Rome converted. Attila had his fun soon after Constantine made Christianity the state religion.
Given that, I would say that it is better for the state to stay secular.
