This is the exact same scenario with Ginobilli - getting a contract they don't deserve basketball wise because they fill in the seats tbh.

Very true - but with Ginobili they are still reaching NBA finals and are a good team. Unlike Kobe, who's getting paid 4x the amount to only fill seats tbh..

if they're both re-signed to fill seats then I think Kobe is legitimately worth 4x the amount Manu gets. Kobe sells tickets & jerseys in worldwide when Manu only maintains espanol-hablando fans and markets

Similar situations, but not exact as I said. Manu is still expected to produce for a team that makes it to the finals. Kobe is the leader of a terrible team with 0 basketball expectations.

Signing Kobe to an extension is a no-brainer, tbh..

There isn't a realistic plan for the Lakers to contend in the next 5 years, even with the inevitable collision that gives them another star player..so, knowing they are going to be a mediocre team for at least the next 3 years, it makes sense to keep Kobe and his chase for career records, tbh..

Kobe has the most devout cult in the NBA, arguably sports..the majority of his fans would literally lick his balls, tbh..it doesn't make sense for the Lakers ownership to further alienate their fans, especially since they currently have a poor approval rating..

It's his normal "get back on D" for the past few years though.

I agree from a marketing standpoint, but from a compe ive standpoint, you cut your losses and/or bring in real talent. What would cause a game changer to look at LA? Kobe gone. That would be a huge difference maker to people who could be the future of the franchise.

But, the Lakers front office won't go that route. They will use Kobe to sell season tickets for as long as they can. That 30m a year for basically Utah Jazz results is going to pay off for the Lakers, in ticket sales at least.

When Tim retires, I could see Pop being lured to LA, perhaps, especially if they had real talent, however their system might not be attractive enough for Pop who wants to run the entire show pretty much.

Being able to 'run' is one things. Being able to move laterally and take off on isos and coming off screens where you have to push off on that achilles and have it flexible is something else entirely.

Bryant has been overrated defensively for a decade and he is going to be ty trying to keep up with the James Hardens of the world and his first step is going to be greatly diminished. He can run because it won't hurt him anymore but that does not mean he is anyhting near what he was and what he was was a player obviously on the decline.

If they resign damaged goods then they deserve to pay massive luxury tax bills to even make the playoffs. 5 more years of mediocrity in tinseltown works for me.
