President Obama’s appointee to a plum South American ambassadorship is at the center of a dispute over whether he bought the post fair and square — a battle that is dividing powerful Los Angeles financial supporters and which lifts a curtain on the forces of money and influence that help drive presidential politics.
Noah Mamet, a 44-year-old political consultant and longtime fundraiser, was appointed as U.S. ambassador to Argentina at the end of July. When word got around as early as April that Mamet would receive the nomination, the news was met with surprise, and in some cases anger, by his peers in the donor class.

Ambassadorships are typically awarded to the president’s largest donors. Of the 72 ambassadors Obama has named during his second term, more than half are classified as political appointees, rather than career foreign service officers.
Those posts also go to people who have given less money themselves but have raised — or “bundled” — enormous sums. Rufus Gifford, Obama’s former national finance director, is now in his fourth month as ambassador to Denmark, and the former Obama for America finance chair, Matthew Barzun, is now the ambassador to the United Kingdom. But few of Obama’s ambassador selections have precipitated as much talk this year as the decision to send Mamet to Buenos Aires.

One factor in Mamet’s favor may be his friendship with Messina, Obama’s longtime adviser. When the Hollywood Reporter first wrote about the news of Mamet’s appointment in May, the magazine reported that Mamet had been “championed” by Messina for the role. The two were described as “incredibly close” by one fundraiser, who recalled Mamet driving Messina around Los Angeles on a visit during the campaign.

My uncle was a career diplomat. These ambassadors have to be pushed to the side in many cases being that they no nothing about the country the are given. Obama is not the first to play this game, but the public is certainly being given far more info on his methods.
It is indeed disgusting. Thankfully these appointees usually walk right into a situation with experts around them. People that can speak the language, know the economy, know the culture and the players. Lot of dead weight in the State Dept.
What's there to know in Argentina? You don't flush the toilet paper and you don't drink the water. Also, you spend your paycheck on Friday before the money loses all it's value by Monday.

Rubio emphasized a sour state of affairs with Argentina, while Mamet gave a positive spin on the relations with Argentina.
“We have an ally that doesn’t pay bondholders, doesn’t work with our security operations, is reopening the AMIA terrorist investigations ... these aren’t the actions of an ally,” Rubio said, concluding that this would only change with “a new government.”

Argentina to US senators: Show a little respect
Foreign Minister Hector Timerman called Sens. Marco Rubio and Robert Menendez "extremists" who don't represent the will of the Senate, the U.S. government or the American people.
Cabinet chief Jorge Capitanich says both senators should show more respect.
Both senators disagreed Thursday with nominee Noah Mamet's statement that Argentina is a mature democracy and an ally, and suggested that the U.S. needs a more experienced diplomat in Buenos Aires.
"There is a very high likelihood that if you are confirmed, while you are in that post, you are going to have another similar collapse in Argentina to what you saw economically just a decade ago," Rubio, a Republican, warned.
Argentine officials reacted angrily to the criticism, without mentioning what the senators said about the South American nation's economic woes.

Sorry to say, ElNono, Rubio giving the needle to Argentina I construe to be on the order of a stifled fart, or something like that.
Last time he spoke up and anyone cared, Rubio was talking about immigration. I think he has a powerful need to put that in the shade.
