is it advisable to buy one?

a friend of mine told me not to buy until the production (or software shiznits) stabilizes (or something to that effect)...

is there some truth to that?

    but i want one now!

Get one now. Over here there relatively cheap already and they're definately worthwhile.

I think DVD copying has virtually peaked.

DVD read speeds for PCs has been at 16x for 5 years and has not progressed, and burners will burn at that speed with the correct media.

Mine is a good one and cost me $120AU (relatively cheap) last year.

I just picked up a second one at Fry's for $40. You can get similar deals at Newegg. Just get something that can do dual layer and you should have all the bases covered.

I just got a computer with dual layer DVD writer. I don't know how to use it...yet.

A friend of mine came by last night and installed NERO but we couldn't get it to work.

Funny thing about Nero is that you have to specify at the beginning whether you are using a CD or DVD as your burning media. You may want to check that. I always thought the media could be determined automatically, but apparently not in the version I have.

I just use the OEM version that came with the burner, it does have SmartStart. At the start of the job you choose CD or DVD up in the corner IIRC.

Now that I think about it. I start the final burning process and this is where it stops due to error.

Yeah, that's the error that shows when you try to burn a DVD job onto a CD or vice versa. It's easy to miss.

Not that I've seen, but I imagine by the end of the year, more should be in production with all the DL burners being sold. I don't have an acute need for DL capacity right now, so I'm content to wait.

Like copy a movie? That's not possible without some software to get around the copy protection.

If you intend to buy one, dont buy the big branded burners cose they did sumthing to lock it, and it has more problems then brands u dont know, trust me i got one and i cant even do dvd-2-dvd. I recommend gettin liteon they are the best imo, thats my next burner.
