Nets Rescind Trade for Shareef Abdur-Rahim
Abdur-Rahim
East Rutherford, NJ (August 9, 2005)- The New Jersey Nets have rescinded their trade with the Portland Trail Blazers for forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Nets President Rod Thorn announced today. The Nets and Trail Blazers had agreed on a deal, pending a physical, that would have sent the nine-year veteran to the Nets in exchange for the Nets first round pick in 2006, lottery protected, and the team’s trade exception as a result of the Kerry Kittles trade to the Los Angeles Clippers in 2004.
“We were anticipating adding Shareef to our roster,” said Thorn. “However, during the course of his normal physical examination, some questions arose that gave us cause for concern. After consulting with several noted specialists, we feel that rescinding the trade is our best course of action. We will now look in other directions for ways to improve our team for the upcoming season.”
Wow. I didn't think they'd actually back out. Well they really wanted him, so I guess those five or six doctors must have put real doubt in their heads.
Ouch.
SARS to San Antonio?
Let the sparks fly ... again.

Tlong's going to be pissed. So's SAR.
SAR should be pissed. Lawrence Frank convinced him to turn down a much higher offer from the Bucks.
Damn. Dude must be really ed up or really pissed at the Nets. The Nets have nothing and nowhere to go now. Maybe Thorn got cold feet at the thought of signing him to 5 years after the way Kidd's 6-year deal has screwed them.
So who has money left? Miami. Dallas.
If he didn't pass the Nets physical, then I doubt many other teams will be jumping all over him.
I don't think this is a case of the Nets getting cold feet about him. They really wanted him; his knee must be of concern. Lawrence Frank was at SAR's house at midnight when free agency began.
not if he can't pass a physical.Rasho for SAR.
Exactly. If the Nets' docs didn't love him, why would the Spurs' docs?
Sucks all the way around, tough luck.
I want my vBucks back. All 25 of them.

I'm assuming that the vbookie was already paid out?
Can you sign a player to a no play no pay contract?
Why would the Spurs want damaged goods?
Are you going to adjust? I know I got some for SAR signing with the Nets, but now he's not going.
VBookie Controversy![]()
The Spurs have taken a player who's trade was voided due to failing a physical.
Recall Sean Elliott was traded to the Rockets who voided the trade after he failed the physical. Of course we know what they discovered in that physical. Despite his kidney problem, Sean came back to San Antonio and was productive for a while and won a ring in '99.
SAR's knee has supposedly been that way since HS. Maybe you take a chance provided the contract is written right.
I wonder if this makes him uninsureable. If so SAR's value just hit rock bottom.
If we got him for half price....If the Nets' docs didn't love him, why would the Spurs' docs?
Brilliant!
Pay him like...1000 bucks / minute. Then let Pop stick him in the doghouse.
God, that pay rate seems absolutely ridiculous....then you come to realize that it's not far off from what the average NBA player makes.
Tim makes like $4100 for every minute of playing time, put at a rough average of 38 minutes for 100 games in a seasons pay.

This is ridiculous. Reef has never missed a game due to a knee injury in his entire career. He has some scar tissue from an injury he suffered in high school and the Nets seem to think it could potentially be arthritic. It has not caused him any problems to date though.
You can certainly build in incentives for games played per season, etc. If at some point he can't play anymore, it's less of a problem now with the new CBA -- NJ is just especially gunshy since they are still paying Deke and Zo.
