i just use a $850 asus laptop and have a go-phone that i spend maybe $20 a month
So I've been thinking about that quite a bit lately, with convergence being the new trend these days how do you prioritize and what do you really need tbh?
Phone : I feel like it's worth going for a Samsung or an Apple flagship in this case... The Samsung amoled screen enough for me not to buy anything else, I read a lot of ebooks on my Note and it's a lot less tiring on the eyes than LED to me. Apple has the best games, great design and the best resell value so I think it's worth it as well... Besides it's the only device you carry all day and everywhere you go so imo it's worth the most... Moto X, Nexus and the upcoming One plus One are great for the money but I've had some bad experiences with Nexus build quality...
Pc/laptop : not sure but strongly feel like it's not worth putting a lot of money into unless you use it for gaming... I'm even considering a chromebook at this point. Or something like the Asus T100... Then again any Apple laptop is probably worth it as well due to the resell value.
TV/projector : not sure either but feel like the best value is probably between 800 and 1600 bucks... Anything above 2k feels overkill but you do keep it a while so there's that... UHD is nice and all but there's no content aside from Naughty America vids so it doesn't seem worth it right now unless you watch several hours of porn per day, there's plenty of time to upgrade...
Gaming : no idea... Gonna wait until the steam machines are out, I see zero reason to upgrade to the next gen at this point anyway... Both the One and the ps4 are at the same price starting next month...
TV box : no clue tbh... Guess it's really up to what fits with the rest of your stuff and consoles can replace them in a lot of ways anyway...
I know the first thing that will come up is just buy a 1500 bucks gaming desktop instead of a chromebook + steambox/console and I guess that's true for quite a few people but to me desktops are just not practical enough in this day and age and gaming on a the couch is just better...

u can buy a gaming laptop under 1500, if its gaming laptop whether its 15inch or 17inch it better come with HD resolution 1920x1080
probably the most worthwhile investment these days on any PC/laptop is an SSD if you don't have one... it can make even old machines feel new...

Steam Machines will more than likely cost much more than you building a Micro ATX PC yourself. Building is seriously as easy as putting Legos together if you aren't experienced with it.Tbh, a projector sounds like a nice addition for me, building my man cave as we speak..one wall will be dedicated to projected sports or maybe the occasional video game.
Mini itx is seriously the way to go now unless you're going to do a lot of overclocking. The amount of power you can pack into small form factor pcs is insane. Unless you never want to move your rig, then just go full atx.
I think that's what I will do for my daughter this Christmas. She's excited to build her own PC.
Just make sure to get a modular power supply or you're gonna have a bad time.
