2hrs with a stand and mixing bowl???
that doesn't sound right..... it should take like 20 mins.
did you use too big bowl? fast enough speed?
man.. maybe your mixer just sucks.
And the instructions didn't warn me that whipping 9 egg whites into stiff peaks would take nearly 2 hours. Did I add the sugar too soon? Or is my mixer really that sub-par? Thank goodness I have a stand and mixing bowl.. my arm wouldn't have lasted that long. Anyway, it came out really good.

There's a billboard on 90 going into downtown that says Tres Leches is not a food group. So funny.
Well, my mixer is pretty new (I just bought it a few months ago), but it was kind of a cheapie from Target. I don't do enough baking to justify a Kitchen Aid. Yeah, maybe the bowl was too big. Plus, the directions said to add the sugar as the whites begin to fluff. Well I added the sugar about 10 minutes in...
Think that had anything to do with it? IF I ever make it again, I'll wait until they're starting to peak up before I add the sugar.
i get the feelign thats a big IF
BTW- i do alot of baking and even i can't justify $300 for that damn kitchen aid.![]()
I have one, it's awesome. It was actually the bigger one that I bought for my mom for christmas one year and I inherited it back.
I'm no merrangue expert, but I would imagine the added weight of the sugar would keep the air bubbles from forming easily.

Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer - K45SS
$134.99
List Price: $179.99
You Save: $45.00 (25%)
The rugged, all-metal design and 250-watt, 10-speed motor of this KitchenAid mixer make heavy duty mixing a cinch. The unique Kitchen Aid mixing action-with the beater moving clockwise and the shaft moving counter-clockwise-mixes all ingredients evenly and thoroughly with no need to rotate the bowl. Tilt-up head eases cleaning, and rubber feet ensure stability. Includes 4-1/2-qt. stainless steel bowl, flat beater, dough hook and wire whip. No. K45SS. Made in USA.
I bought one of these in June and am very pleased. It doesn't come with all the cool attachments most KitchenAid appliances do, but it's tough to beat a brand name with a 250 watt motor for $135.
You may have added the sugar too soon - it's possible the sugar weighed down the rest of the mixture before the air really started to get in.
That's not so bad.
On a related note, I might need a new iron. I was pulling the vacuum out of the corner and thought the end of hte cord was stuck, so I gave it a good yank... Well, it was the cord to the iron and the iron came crashing down... oops.
I have a Kitchen Aid Mixer and I heart it so much!!!!!!!
Btw, you CAN use those 20% off coupons that Linens-n-Things and Bed, Bath and Beyond give out all the time on Kitchen Aid mixers.
Dude, Bed Bath and Beyond is such a kick ass store because of all the applicances. If I had money, I'd buy everything in there.
But unfortunetly, I spent all my money at Target.![]()
My mother has the expensive one w/ the huge mixing bowl. She uses it a lot because she runs a retail pecan store and makes an a__load of candy for sale.
My sister has the cheaper one. For normal people, it's probably fine, but nowhere near the machine the other one is. The big one is a hoss.
My mom ran her own business and catered a lot....she used it constantly. She told me if I was going to buy her the mixer, don't even waste my time or hers on the smaller one. SHE WANTED THE HOSS.
So that's what she got.![]()
The best Tres leches cake in the whole wide world is at Americas restaurant in Houston on San Felipe. We drive an hour and a half just to eat at this place and in fact are going there tonight. f you ever get to Houston, I hope you can go to Americas, it is better than any restaurant in SA, I promise you that, in both decor and food.
My wife loves the Tres leches cake, and one year, I threw a surprise birthday party for her and hired a chef to make the cake for her as a surprise. It was good, but nothing as good as Americas' offering.
The best Tes Leches cake is in Houston?
And the best meatballs are in New York?
And the best sushi is in Miami?
And the...
Ah, you get the point.
Manny, if you go try it there and you do not agree with me, I will pay for your dinner there which would be about $50.
This is a So American restaurant, and the owner and chef are from So America where Tres leches cake was first made as a wedding cake. It is not Mexican.
I had gone thru several irons before I got this one:

It's AWESOME. And it's heavy, which is great casue it presses out my clothes quicker and easier, i don;t have to rely on steam as much.
oh, and I've dropped it like 30 million times nad it still works great. Had it for 5 years now.
I think the places of origion usually have the best of whatever.
But I'll check out the place, and I'm sure I'll like it. I'm always down for good food. Next time I go to Htown with Jess, we'll go there.
This is my iron:
I don't iron.
What, you don't use the dryer?![]()
Every time I need to iron, I just bite the bullet, build up a fire & get after it.

I iron every morning. Except weekends.
It is part of my morning.
