For nothing more than the vet min i'd say why not.
Yeah, yeah, I know. Just hear me out.
Honestly, I just want to bring back last year's squad. Restructure Timmy's contract and sell Bonner for scrap to throw more money at the guys who have earned it, then go repeat. But it's pretty likely that somebody wants to overpay Mills (assuming he's healthy), and I don't know that Pop is sold on the idea of CoJo doing what Patty did for us last year. We may need to add another guard. God help me, I have a suggestion.
I'm not saying we *should* target Thabo Sefolosha. I don't actually *think* that we should. But if we *did* get him, it would probably turn out really well for us. Here's why:
- The Boris Diaw Effect - The Spurs have a strong history of taking formerly-celebrated guys who look washed up and finding a way to make them succeed again. Thabo used to be scary, once upon a time; he's not injured, he's not crazy, he hasn't even gotten fat.
- The Danny Green Effect - When a guy who has a few demonstrated NBA skills regresses badly it can be because a less-than-great coach is more focused on accommodating his banner stars than on building a working system. I can't see a reason for Thabo's woes except that Brooks is a lousy coach who doesn't know how to use him. Might be one, but I don't see it.
- The Patty Mills Effect - The regular season taught the world to respect Mills as a sharpshooter, but nobody guessed how great he'd be defensively in the Playoffs. Okay, he's not making anybody's All-D team, but his energy and intelligence made him surprisingly effective. Thabo, if he panned out, could be the opposite: a guy who's known as a solid defender, but who could also (after some late nights with Chip and in a system that creates good-to-great looks from the perimeter) maybe recapture his former utility from range. That would be cool.
Thabo sucked this year, and his total absence in the Playoffs will cost him a ton of money. That's one thing to like about him. And while I don't pretend to know enough about him as a player to say that there *is* a chance of making him the next guy who makes his big comeback in a Spurs jersey, I'm confident that R.C. has a well-informed opinion on the subject. If Sefolosha did end up landing in San Antonio it would be because Pop is confident that he can contribute.
So, yeah. I don't really want to change our roster up one bit, but that may not be an option. I can't see a lot of guys out there on the market who I think could do more with our backup backcourt minutes for the kind of money we'd be looking to spend.
For nothing more than the vet min i'd say why not.
Much rather make a run at Al Farouq Aminu or Marvin Williams.
personally more intrigued with Aminu... i wonder if Chip can repair his jumper at all
Agreed and was wondering the same thing. Only 23 and is a great defender and rebounder. Ton of potential still.
Why do we think SF with some game still left, still in or nearing their primes, would want to play backup to one of the youngest up-and-coming stars at their position?
He never impressed me. Inconsistent shooter, and defensively was overrated. He made Tony work sometimes. Big effin deal.
no, he was horrible for OKC this season.
At this point he'd be Keith Bogans 2.0
This. After his showing in the WCF, why would you want this joke? Scored like 3 points the entire series, and not even his D could buy him any minutes.
^ this, tbh
Our system does allow for guys at his position that can't hit threes.
Not enough size, defense, or shooting.
He'd be one of the worst possible wing additions. I'd rather the Spurs try to trot out DeShaun Thomas at the two than bring Sef in.
He could be the X factor against OKC, this guy has practiced guarding KD/WB for years, he knows their game. I can see this guy reviving his career here and helping SA beat OKC much more easily.
Guys almost always shine the brightest against their former team as well, we see it all the time.
Meh, he's been looking worse and worse the past few seasons. Can't contribute on offense and is overrated on defense. I think the Spurs can do much better at this point, preferably someone more versatile.
Players like Sefolosha can no longer play in today's NBA, tbh..
What need does sefelosha fill?
We already have Danny, Manu, Kawhi and Belli...
We're good with wings tbh...
Beli is easily the weakest link of the whole PO rotation...
He had ONE bad season, when it became apparent that OKC was not going to bring him back. The previous season, he shot 48% overall and 42% from long.
So, Danny Green is done? Because he's a virtual Sef clone, being the younger of the two.
Sefolosha has actually been a net negative player for the past 2 years, tbh..his defense was once elite and he could make wide open 3s, which obviously made him comparable to Green, but that hasn't been the case for the past 2 years..
His defense is now just above average, and his offense is poor..his shooting has completely disappeared since last year's playoffs, he's absolutely finished..
He was benched in OKC's most important games of the season, which was very telling, considering they're a shallow team that doesn't have many alternatives..

For what the Spurs need he would actually be OK if he played for the minimum.
But unnecessary if Bertans is coming over.
