I was just browsing basketball reference and noticed the site puts the win share statistics on the team page. This is probably so we can see roughly who was the best player on that team during that year. For the Spurs, I was initially curious to see when Tim Duncan started to hand the reins to Parker and Ginobili. It was not surprising that Duncan topped the win shares during his first four NBA championships. It was also not surprising that Leonard became the top win share player this championship year. I became curious about all the other years so I dug further into all the previous championship teams since the Duncan era:

    1999 - Tim Duncan
    2000 - Shaq
    2001 - Shaq
    2002 - Shaq
    2003 - Tim Duncan
    2004 - Chauncey Billups
    2005 - Tim Duncan
    2006 - Dwyane Wade
    2007 - Tim Duncan
    2008 - Kevin Garnett
    2009 - Pau Gasol
    2010 - Pau Gasol
    2011 - Dirk Nowitzki
    2012 - Lebron James
    2013 - Lebron James
    2014 - Kawhi Leonard

    Analysis:

    - The list turned out to be quite accurate. Tim Duncan was the top player for four championship teams. When Duncan declined slightly and Ginobili and Parker took over, no question the Spurs suffered through a drought. It wasn't until Leonard emerged in 2014 that the Spurs could finally reclaim the championship. The same goes for the 2008 Celtics. Pierce suffered in NBA purgatory until the Garnett trade finally gave the Celtics a finals trip. Garnett never maintained his 2008 high level play due to injury and the Celtics could not win another championship.

    - There is one player con uously missing. No question Shaq was the best player during the Lakers 3 peat. And when Kobe took over as the best player for the Lakers, the Lakers predictably tumbled. However, the arrival and dominance of Pau Gasol in 2009 and 2010 lifted the Lakers into a championship. It makes sense that Kobe is not on this list. It is the same reason players like Parker, Ray Allen, Jason Terry, Chris Bosh, and Ginobili are not on this list.

    - From this list we can roughly compile a list of the top players of the Duncan Era. The count is:

    Duncan: 4
    Shaq: 3
    Lebron James: 2
    Pau Gasol: 2
    Dirk Nowitzki: 1
    Dwyane Wade: 1
    Chancey Billups:1
    Kawhi Leonard: 1
    Kevin Garnett: 1
    Kobe Bryant: 0

Solid analysis. And if you go back and look at the 91-98 Bulls you see Jordan 6 (all rings) and Pippen 2 (no rings, Jordan playing american cricket).

Similarly, 03-08 Lakers is all Kobe but 0 rings.

More evidence that the Jordan/Kobe comparison is pure media fellatio, the more appropriate comparison is Kobe/Pippen.

Advance stats are for nerds. The eye test is what truly counts. You think NBA legends have advance metrics in their hands when watching the game? No. It's about the fire and killer instinct, something that doesn't show up in a stat sheet.

It actually applied all the way back to the Jordan days:

    http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/show...ght=win+shares.

It also generally works for the playoffs, but again, playoffs are more about match ups and stuff. Parker vs. the Cavs in 07 was an example of this, and if you have a player who have favourable matchups for a few series, you can skew the series pretty good.

But we all know Kobe's best days were 05 to 07, when he led the Lakers a phenomenal 2 playoffs out of the 3 years with total crap supporting players like 15.5ppg/6 reb Caron Butler (better numbers than Duncan's number 2 in 00/01 Derek Anderson), and a 15/10/4 Lamar Odom.
