U.S. Senate confirms San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro to head HUD
    Source: Houston Chronicle

The U.S. Senate on Wednesday overwhelmingly approved San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro to be President Obama’s next housing and urban affairs secretary, a post that will raise his profile in national politics.

The vote was 71 to 26, with Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, joining the GOP opposition.

With Democrats in control of the Senate, and only a majority vote needed to confirm Castro’s nomination to head the Department of Housing and Urban Development, there was little open debate about the 39-year-old mayor.

The vote was widely expected after Castro won the public backing of fellow Texan John Cornyn, the second-ranking Republican in the Senate. In a Senate hearing last month, Cornyn called the 39-year-old mayor an “example that the American dream is still very much alive.”
