    Rip.

If "the notebook" is the first thing that pops into your head when you hear James Garner's name, then you need to turn in you man card immediately.

Space Cowboys and Maverick in his latter years. The Great Escape.
They say he was the first major star who made it big in both the movies and on TV.

There is a fine "Rockford" that I believe has fallen into public domain: "Quickie Nirvana." It is a fine example of Garner's acting prowess and encompasses a wide range of angles to view him.

If you can find it---find it.

Maybe not the same caliber of star as Eastwood or Paul Newman but certainly in that same class of remarkable longevity. RIP.

I don't watch any pre-1990's movies, so this guy was well before my time and I've never heard of him.

As "Maverick" he was just another cowboy, there were ton's of westerns back then. Steve McQueen, Clint Eastwood, Richard Boone, Nick Adams all did TV and movies.

I liked him best in "The Rockford Files" it was one of my weekly gotta sees. Great actor.

I'm thinking the first tv/movie star was Lucille Ball.....hmmmm? In her case movie/tv.

    You could be right.
But you could also say George Burns too, or William Bendix (The Life of Riley) and films before that, and Robert Young, Jane Wyman, Fred McMurry, Jimmy Durante, Dean Martin, and Broderick Crawford.
I think the point they were making about Garner is that he was already a famous movie star of films before becoming a famous TV star, and the again as a famous movie star.

I always got the impression Garner was just an actor and his big break was on tv playing Maverick. That role put him on the map more so than the movies.

Forget Lucy, I started thinking....Buster Crabbe, movie Tarzan/tv Flash Gordon.

Garner tells the story of when he landed the lead role in Grand Prix…Steve McQueen was so mad at him that he would dump his house trash on Garner’s front lawn… They sure seemed to have a lot more fun back in the 50’s & 60’s…

Used to watch this Rockford with my grandfather. Was pretty decent ..better than Matlock and Columbo imo but not as good as the Golden Girls which was about as good as it got when it came to watching TV with the grandparents.
