The forum seems preoccupied with the notion that the Spurs must have an eventual replacement for Bruce Bruce on the roster today. What if the Spurs already have that man, but he won't be in the NBA this season?

Honestly, did anyone really expect the Spurs to sign Oberto this summer? As long as the Spurs have Scola's draft rights they will be able to dictate when he will enter the NBA. Hermann reportedly wants to make the jump to the NBA. The Spurs will have their full MLE next summer. Perhaps the Spurs are headed down this path.

technically the spurs could bring in Hermann in this season and it is still a possibility if the other SF FA(Dermarr Johnson, Gerald Wallace, Matt Barnes, etc) are taking off of the market.

i partially agree that the long term solution might not come before next summer. However, we have 10 players signed and around 4 million left to spend. meaning at least 3 player will be added and maybee 4.
RC said today that as it is Spurs have enough Bigs (5 is enough especially given their quality, plus one of them might be traded for two of lesser value)

So obviously a 3th PG will join meaning there is at least 2 more seats empty. and they do not concern bigs nor PG

we have already 2-2 manu and barry and only one 3

logically one of the 2 spots left will be a 3. and since we are fans and we love to have sufficient back up at every position and bowen is not superman (he can hurt too) we want a decent 3 back up.

i will concede that a young one might not be the solution but it would certainly be a bonus. Glenn is not young but has at least 2 great years to give to the spurs and so does bowen but...after them...

A Mike Batiste type of player... More athletic and stronger... Good rebounding skills for his size... Decent mid-range shot... A small forward or a power forward?... Needs to show that he can shed the "tweener" tag.

that is from hoopshype on Theron Smith

If he'll play for what the Spurs have left, then come on over.

But I thought he was under contract in Europe for one more season?

If that were the case, they wouldn't have been targeting -- Maurice Evans, James Jones, Damien Wilkins, etc so far this summer. The Spurs are definitely looking for a young 3.

He is a good player, he has offensive skills and athletic ability, but his defence would need a lot of work under the Spurs system. Pop would go Serbian at him quite a few times in his rookie year.

He was rumoured as a target for the Hornets and Bobcats at the beginning of the offseason, but I believe that NBA teams will wait until his contract with Spanish club Unicaja Malaga runs out.

Hermann does not fir the mold of "young, long, athletic defender."

The successful candidate will succeed Bruce Bowen as the anchor of the team's perimeter defense. That is not Hermann's strength. If you're going to argue that Popovich can mold him into a defender, I would reply that it would be better to have a player who has the tools to become an elite defender in the first place. Almost any player can be taught how to fit into the Spurs' team defensive scheme. Anchoring said scheme is different.

Why must the 3 be that "anchor"? In addition, I would argue that you don't need an "anchor" as much as you need a total team commitment.

for once i will go on marcus side.
remember in the DVD how pop is parising the combined perimeter defense of manu, tony and bruce.
bruce was the anchor also because manu and tony had to carry the offense. if you bring an offensive 3 like herman. it will leave more energy on defense for manu and tony.

    hermann would be fine but

    VOTE FOR BARNES

Because that's the scheme that has worked now for 4 years. Pop tried it the other way in 2000-01. That way failed.

The Spurs depend on having a guy who can stick with the opposition's best perimeter scorer so that they don't have to double-team him.

Besides, the Spurs don't really have 1-2-3-4-5 positions. They have a point, two wings, and two posts. With Manu starting at one wing, you don't really want your other wing to be offense-first. Manu should be getting those touches. Have your other wing move without the ball, set screens, get rebounds, and focus on defense.

It failed in 2001 because the team was old and decrepit out on the perimeter after DA was clotheslined. That team was still good enough for the top seed and a conference finals appearance.

Pop has already come out and said that Bruce is the pointman for the defense. He makes everything work. I'd expect the FO to target someone in that mold. Stick with what works.

Yes, Bruce works in that role but it doesn't always have to be like that.

If something works enough to help you get two rings, why not try to duplicate it as much as possible.

Yeah but it's not like you can be assured of finding another player who is as good of a perimeter defender as BB.
