SAN ANTONIO -- The New Orleans Saints may be forced to play their home opener away from the Superdome after Hurricane Katrina ripped away part of the roof, possibly paving the way for a regular season NFL game in San Antonio.
Alamodome director Mike Abbington told KSAT 12 Sports on Monday that the Alamodome is open on Sept. 17 and 18, but it may be difficult to prepare for a game by that time.
Abbington added he would work hard to host a game, if Saints officials contact him and indicate the Alamodome would be needed.
The Saints are scheduled to host the New York Giants on Sept. 18.
The Superdome suffered two holes in the curved roof, which allowed rain in the stadium, as thousands of storm refugees huddled inside it.
Superdome and government emergency officials stressed that they did not expect the huge roof to collapse because of the relatively small breaches.
The Saints are currently training in California.
