Kind of an odd signing -- but they could be thinking of Dre at the 2 or trading him or Boykins. I figured Watson would work out better in LA (but Phil's hardon for PG size might preclude that) or even possibly start in Toronto.
I'm guessing they are going to go with a small backcourt and basically play Boykins at the two on offense.
Still an odd signing seeing as they really need a shooting guard and point guard is their deepest position.
Well they re-signed DerMarr Johnson, Greg Buckner AND signed Earl Watson. So they are probably done for the summer, right?

Johnson and Buckner were both part-time starters for the Nuggets last season. Johnson averaged 7.1 points in 17 minutes per game, while Buckner got 6.2 points in 22 minutes per game in 2004-05.
Earl Watson averaged a career-best 7.7 points and 4.5 assists for the Grizzlies last season. Watson is the fourth player to leave Memphis via free agency or sign and trade this summer. The Grizzlies revamped lineup will be without Watson, Bonzi Wells, Jason Williams and Stromile Swift next season.
That's a pretty good pull this late in free agency. Having three good point guards doesn't make much sense, unless they are moving Boykins to shooting guard.
That could be fun to watch.

Sacramento radio station said a trade of Luke Jackson and other stuff for Boykins is on the way supposedly.
Damn, the Cavs would be deadly. And damn fun to watch.

If I were the Nuggets I would try and ship off Andre Miller and trade him to a PG deficiant team, and cut some pay roll in the process.
It wouldn't surprise me if the Nuggets try and move Boykins now. The guy is talented but he's a black hole on offense. I seem to remember even Nuggets fans were bashing him on their board during the first round because of his ball-hogging ways. He definitely plays like a 2 guard but he'd get abused on defense if they kept him in that position for an extended period.

Denver makes move, lands guard Watson

With much of the dust already settled on the free-agent market, the Nuggets made their move Thursday for one of the top names left on the shelf.
They agreed to sign Memphis point guard Earl Watson to a five-year deal believed to be worth about $29.3 million. The Nuggets also retained shooting guards Greg Buckner and DerMarr Johnson with one-year contracts.
Denver was rarely mentioned publicly close to Watson's name as Cleveland, Utah, Minnesota and others reportedly eyed him. But agent Dan Fegansaid the Nuggets made early contact with him and separated themselves with a "consistent and professional" approach.
Fegan also listed coach George Karl as a draw, saying, "He's an expert at exploiting mismatches and he's always found ways to use talented players. A case in point is how they finished (last) season. Since George took over they had the best record in the NBA."
Because the contracts are not yet signed, Nuggets general manager Kiki Vandeweghe declined comment.
The 6-foot-1 Watson averaged 7.7 points and 4.5 assists in his fourth pro season and third with the Grizzlies, and is known for his defense.
Watson, who receives Denver's $5 million midlevel exception for this year, will have to split time with in bent starter Andre Miller and Earl Boykins at the point, though Vandeweghe indicated Wednesday he could foresee the three working together.
But with the roster now overflowing with guards and big men, the Nuggets have also placed themselves in a position to make a major trade if they choose. Their full backcourt could mean free agent Wesley Person ends up elsewhere.
Denver center Marcus Camby said of Watson, "He's a fiery backup point guard. He provided a spark (for Memphis) when Jason Williams was out. I'm happy he's aboard."
Camby also welcomed the return of Buckner, who will receive the biannual exception of $1.67 million, and Johnson, who will earn the minimum of about $770,000 after Denver went 28-12 in the games he started.
"I'm just happy Buck and D.J. are back. Buck is the consummate pro," Camby said. "He's one of coach's favorites. He doesn't complain. D.J. saved his career after a car accident. Our record was very good when he was in the starting lineup."
Fegan, who also represents Johnson, added, "D.J. expressed to me from the very beginning of the process that he wanted to remain a Nugget. He was patient throughout the process and a Nugget he will remain."
Moe stays upbeat
Doug Moe, the Nuggets' winningest coach and a current assistant, joked Thursday he is more worried about his flight to Texas than about the surgery he will undergo in San Antonio on Sept. 12 to remove prostate cancer, and that he is spending more time thinking about his upcoming fantasy football draft.
"I hope I have as little problems with this as I did with my heart surgery," said Moe, who rebounded from a heart attack last year. "I'm looking forward to getting it done. I wouldn't say I'm ecstatic about it, but it doesn't faze me in the least."
Moe said his doctor made the discovery from a blood test to check his cholesterol soon after the Nuggets returned from summer league in Las Vegas in July. Like Karl, who underwent a similar procedure last month, Moe said his cancer has been caught early, meaning chances of a full recovery are strong.
Moe added that Karl's experience and wisdom helped him through the bad news. Predicting he would be able to join the Nuggets at the start of training camp Oct. 3, the coach pointed out that he rarely exerts himself physically in his current role.
"What do I do? I sit and hold George's hand anyway," he said. "That's my job."

With Andre Miller and Earl Boykins already firmly entrenched as starter and backup and with both having resigned with the club over the past two off seasons (Boykins reupped last summer; Miller reupped during summer '03) - why would the Nuggets sign yet another backup PG? To a multi-year deal no less?

Grizzlies Attempted Watson Trade
Memphis Commercial Appeal - Earl Watson is expected to sign a five-year, $29.3 million deal with Denver as early as today, leaving the Grizzlies with nothing to show for their investment. The Memphis Commerical Appeal, however, reports that the Grizzlies did try to get something for Watson but nothing came into fruition.
Even as of last Friday the Griz talked to Denver about receiving a first-round draft pick in a deal for Watson. The Nuggets offered only a second-round selection and wanted the Grizzlies' $4.9 million trade exception.
Barring a last-minute agreement between the teams, Watson will simply sign a contract with the Nuggets using their $5 million midlevel exception.
"If a sign-and-trade was an option I would have been gone a long time ago -- probably to Minnesota, to be honest with you," Watson said, adding that "Minnesota was the most persistent" in seeking a trade.
Griz president Jerry West declined several offers from the Timberwolves because of his disinterest in a player or a long-term, expensive contract. Boston, Utah, Orlando, the Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland also presented options for Watson.
Watson, who declined a four-year $20 million offer from Orlando, also rejected a contract offer from Utah more than a week ago.
He scoffed at reports that his asking price was unreasonable or well beyond $6 million.
"None of that was ever true," Watson said. "All I ever wanted was something close to the midlevel or the midlevel, and to play for a team that had an upside."
trust me when i say that alot of us Nuggets fans were asking the same thing about this signing but we are sure that its either coz Kiki is going to pull off a big move during the season or just coz we need some more defense in our backcourt and Watson is a good defensive player..........if we wanted to go defensive we could go with

or we can throw Hodge into the mix (after he proves himself)
its not the best defensive lineup but it is definately the best defensive lineup the Nuggets have had in a long long time.
There were no good SG's left (im glad SPreee didn't go to the Nuggets). I guess we will find out the real reason for this signing when the season rolls around
