Kawhi Leonard has 128 steals this year compared to only 112 fouls. This is amazing, he has more steals than fouls! Anyone know how common this is?
PS - for his career (regular season), Kawhi has 424 steals and 426 fouls.
probably one of the most underrated improvement on his defensive game is his ability to Guard without fouling way too much. Last years game 1 and 2 was out of a norm and probably was just officials. But overall, during his first year..He had a tendency to foul here and there....

This guy's ability to snatch the ball is one of a kind.
This is why the Spurs have a chance to beat anyone. Sean Elliott put it best: "Kawhi Leonard is a sick joke to opposing teams on defense!"
For quick reference. According to ESPN stats Kawhi is one of only 3 players in the top 20 of steals per game who has above a 1.0 Steals/Fouls ratio. Kawhi's is 1.14, the other two are Stephen Curry and Jimmy Butler who are at 1.05 and 1.06 respectively. No one else in the top 20 is over .80 ratio in this category.

Danny fares pretty favorably as well when looking at steals + blocks. Three Spurs in the top 10 when looking at guys who've played substantial minutes (900+).
And for all the Baynes fans, he ranks second to last to Dellavedova. Part of that is he's the designated hack-a-[fill in the blank] guy. Gary Neal is also basically at the other end of the spectrum to Green.

Interesting stats, but unless convinced otherwise, I'd probably put Andrew Bogut ahead of all of those guys if I had a DPOY vote, so I'm not sure how much those stats mean to actual defense. I'd much rather have a guy who gets steals without gambling and giving up defensive position than one who does, but I don't know what metric you'd throw in there to try to figure that out. And fouling isn't necessarily a bad thing if you're keeping guys from getting easy baskets and and-ones.
Bogut plays like minutes compared to most of those guys though. If his minutes increased I'd doubt he be efficient as he is now. Very injury prone too. A contender that lives and dies by an injury prone big. lol
Draymond Green and Kawhi really should be the only two candidates for DPOY
Danny deserves a first or a 2nd team for helping carry the team without Leonard.
I thoroughly enjoy watching Kawhi play basketball. He's really becoming special.

Right, thought it was interesting but definitely not the be all, end all.
Negatives of fouling = early in quarter when not significantly reducing a scoring chance in a non-shooting situation (quicker bonus), bonus/shooting situation against a good FT shooter and shooting situation where FT outcome is higher than clean shot outcome. Also foul trouble.
Positives are as you noted plus the hack-a-[ ] situations, and to get physical. In general though with Timmy through his whole career, he's been very good at playing defense and rebounding without committing fouls. Appears Kawhi is vastly improved in this area. It may be selective memory, but seemed that he used to get called for more fouls in big games and be sidelined for long stretches.
When going up against Harden and GS in particular, avoiding early bonus situations is critical.
Pretty amazing, tbh..I heard Gobert has more blocks than fouls, too, which is pretty unreal for a player getting his first significant minutes in the NBA(didn't play much last year IIRC)..
Here is another interesting stat: The overall ratio of steals to fouls for the entire NBA this season is .382
The Spurs ratio is .420
The average team has 579 steals and 1514 fouls as of yesterday.

I wonder if this is just defensive fouls. Kawhi seems to pickup bogus charging calls at least once a game.
Kawhi does get special treatment though in terms of on ball steals. Some of his steals are normally fouls if some other players are doing it..I think the refs respect him to a point that they just assume it's legit..
He deserves though..He's been getting ty calls the last three years.
steals and especially blocks are a very limited way to judge defensive ability
