He's not a bad player to have, but he's going to have his dumb goaltending, ball on the cylinder tip ins, and free throw misses. He also blocks a lot of shots, is a huge presence on defense under the basket, dominates on the board, and can jump out the gym. He's not worth the max, but he's not a bad guy to have on your team either.
I wish Fredo or Cuban would bail us out, but who am I kidding? This is the franchise that wasted the MLE on Hawes and hasn't had a passable wing defender in almost a decade. We'll max this scrub out and regret it immediately, just like we regret every single other one of Doc's moves. He's the Avante of GM's - literally all of his takes are wrong and backfire immediately.
Signing his son
Doc is as bad as Otis Smith. He'll sign players he knows who as good buddies of his but won't sign a winner. His signing are off emotional basis and not rationale.
I actually do think DeAndre is worth the max, but only because the cap is about to go way up and any deal signed right now will look like a bargain in a few years. Current max is pretty good for a near DPOY center.
DJ's nowhere close to being a DPOY, and even that "bargain" contract is way too much for a player who's still making rookie mistakes in his seventh season in the league.
