WASHINGTON - The federal government plans to dole out debit cards worth $2,000 each to victims of Hurricane Katrina, The Associated Press has learned.

The unprecedented cash card program initially will benefit stranded people who have been moved to rescue centers such as the Houston Astrodome. The program was outlined by Homeland Security Department officials in a conference call with state leaders Wednesday morning, according to a governor and another state official who spoke on condition of anonymity because the program had not been publicly announced.

The cards would be used to buy food, transportation, gas, and other things the displaced people need, Homeland Security officials told state leaders, according to an official who participated in the call and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

It will be interesting to see how this is implemented without allowing people to buy cigs, beer, etc...

Probably like the Lone Star card currently in use that replaced food stamps. You can't buy certain items with it, either.

Then again, I'm pretty sure some of the victims could use a beer...or two...or thr...

Considering that FEMA lost the list of food welfare recepients in the New Orleans area I would say $2,000 is the least they could do. However, I just wonder how this money is going to be distributed given that many evacuees have no identification or paper-work to prove that they actually lived in NO area.

How much crack can you buy with 2k?

Jk it's nice to see some starter money.

They will only do it for adults that have done the proper red cross check in paperwork.

The other day some guy was crying about the paperwork.. That stuff is KEY to y ou getting money later. Because they can get 10-30,000 later by filing a FEMA paperwork (in a couple weeks this will start)

but what about people who left w/o their ids? i bet many don't even have ids. i wonder if those with outstanding warrants will be arrested when they try to claim their money? or what about the deadbeat dads?

all this is nice but I would be damn pissed if I were a home owner, business owner,if I had a mortgage but if you were in "housing" and living on food stamps this would a jackpot!

    I now understand Barbara!
