Pet birds blamed for pot plant


ATHENS, Greece (AP) - A 75-year-old Greek woman has been charged with drug offences after police in her sleepy island village spotted a small cannabis plant growing on her balcony, authorities said.

Hariklia Griva, a widowed mother of four from Ayiassos, on the eastern Aegean Sea island of Lesvos, was arrested Wednesday and charged with growing cannabis with the intent of trafficking in the drug. She was released on bail of the equivalent of about $3,000 Cdn.

The retiree, whose late husband was a policeman, told police the 25-centimetre potted plant grew from seed dropped by her pet canaries. The birds live in a cage on the balcony overlooking a busy Ayiassos street - opposite the local police station.

"I couldn't believe it when they told me I was being arrested," Griva said. "The plant must have grown from the bird seed. I had no idea what the plant was. I watered it regularly. I thought it looked quite nice."

This reminds me of a stupid criminal story I read a while back. A guy who had been growing cannabis in his back yard came home to find a message on his answering machine from someone claiming to be the police. They said that one of his neighbors had spotted the plants in his backyard and had called them, but if he simply brought the plants in to the police station for destruction there would be no charges. What the guy didn't know was that the message was actually one of his idiot friends trying to have a little fun with him. So later that day this genius marches into a police station with an arm load of pot plants and is promptly arrested by some very amused police officers.
