    been saying this forever:

.. The truth is, black people died not because of President Bush or racism, they died because of their unhealthy dependence on the government and the incompetence of Mayor Ray Nagin and Governor Kathleen Blanco," he said.

"If black folks want to blame someone for this tragedy, they only need to look in the mirror. Hopefully, this will help black people realize the folly of depending on the government or leaders and serve as a notice to avert future tragedies in other cities," he said.

It's obviously their fault for being black and poor.

Black political analyst Earl Ofari Hutchinson, author of "The Disappearance of Black Leadership," said the problem lies with the current focus of black leadership, in both the elected and activist crowd, away from the poor and toward the new majority of middle-class black Americans.

thats an interesting tidbit, i never thought about that.

nothing wrong with being black or poor. however, you can change if you are poor or not.

You're right -- it's so easy -- there shouldn't be one poor person in the entire country.

I grew up in a predominately black neighborhood, went to a High School that was 97% black and have worked for a Public Housing Authority (Building Maintenance) with over 3,000 units for almost 23 years where 95% of the tenants are black.

As a previous poster noted there are many factors that attribute to living in poverty. One of most prominent from my experience is the breakdown in the traditional family structure, aka known as the lack of morality. Almost all of the occupants in the Family Housing units are young single females most with children. They are raised in an environment where there is no solid family structure and they leave that environment when they are old enough to qualify for their own government assistance. They are uneducated (as are the majority of there male friends (a lot of very nice people).
Young, single, uneducated and with children, not a good mix for escaping the poverty lifestyle. With many it's way of life, it's generational in nature.

I'll resist the tempation to politisize this but their are politicians who insist on throwing large amounts of taxpayer money at the problem which amounts to just enough money for those on welfare to continue to live comfortably (sarcasm) in poverty. These people are dependent on the Government and they show their appreciation by voting for the party that subsidizes their poverty. (BTW and for what it's worth, HUD just cut our budget by 1.2 million (11%) which resulted in 25 layoffs).

Many prominent black leaders (exceptions, Cosby, Sowell) do nothing to help the situation. Like Jackson spouting "we don't want welfare, we want our share" and looking for a $40,000 payoff for reparations, which would accomplish exactly what? Catch phrases and lump sum payouts aren't fixes, they're ignorantly and purposefully thrown at the poor to appease them so their leaders, whether they be black activists or politicians, can continue to have their blind allegiance to promote their own selfish agendas. They don't care about their people or their so called cons uents, all they care about is themselves.

In essence they're being taught that you can get something, which isn't much, for doing nothing (and yes, their is a legitimate need for government assistance in many cases, but not the majority of them) Like E. John said, "its a sad, sad situation..."

(have to go to work now, will continue my ranting later)

judging from my work with homeless persons

usually a person becomes homeless due to:

    1. a tragic event(s) (ex. fire, natural disaster, etc.)
    2. a tragic flaw (ex. anger, alcoholism, drugs, etc.)
    3. lack of family and friends to fall back on

it's a combination of things..usually people are okay until all three hit at once
    1 is unavoidable.

    2. their fault

    3. you don't need family and friends to succeed in life. that is an excuse.

every credible study outside of your own experience shows that 79% are alcoholics and or addicted to drugs. 20% are crazy and 1% are experiencing tough luck.

The majority of the dead dies because they were poor.

Race had nothing to do with it and frankly, is a distraction which can only serve as a hindrance to the recovery efforts.

EXCUSES!!!! why do you think so many immigrants come to the u.s.? because they know they have a chance at a decent life if they put forth the effort. i've seen plenty of people come to the u.s. with only the clothes on their backs and now have their own homes, live comfortably, have a family, etc..

    i wouldnt say many
if youre a poor single mother with 4 kids and no education or job skills(yes yes shes stupid), i would probably take handouts too because i could work 50 hrs a week minwage with the childcare for 4 kids, she would be losing money
its a tough spot to be in
thats why we need affordable childcare in this country Mr. President
