Two years after the Justice Department approved the latest in a wave of airline mergers, saying the combination would create more choice for consumers, federal prosecutors on Wednesday said they had begun an inquiry into possible collusion among the airlines.

In letters sent to airlines, prosecutors have asked for do ents and information from the past two years that are related to seating capacity. By limiting the number of flights offered, airlines could restrain compe ion and raise fares.

“We are investigating potential unlawful coordination among some airlines,” said Emily Pierce, a Justice Department spokeswoman.

So what's the best case for consumers here? A fine that goes to the government and a *wink wink nudge nudge* don't do it again. What? You want to merge some more major airlines together in 5 years? Sure thing! Here's a billion dollars, have fun.

    Am I being cynical?
