An independent review has found that leaders of the American Psychological Association (APA) covered up the extent of their involvement in post-September 11, 2001 "coercive interrogation programmes", according to a report released on Friday.

High-level professionals from the APA - the largest association of psychologists in the US - secretly colluded with Pentagon and CIA officials to ensure the group's ethical guidelines did not hinder members from taking part in interrogation programmes known to have included torture, the report found.

The seven-month probe, spearheaded by former federal prosecutor David Hoffman, has already led to the firing of at least one official - Stephen Behnke, APA's ethics director - and is sending shock-waves nationwide.

APA was spineless, could have upheld its professional standards and told members not to cooperate. It did not. The mudstrains are well earned and not GWB's fault.

dubya/ head's WH/DoJ lawyers wrote the memos that head wanted, so American torture was directly their responsibility.

Health and mental health professionals who supervised and advised were part of the problem.

Doctors and Psychologists could have taken a stand for professional ethics and morality; they didn't. They cooperated. That's on them, not a lawless and immoral government.

Obama is still torturing folks at Gitmo. It's not all about Republicans. Dems went along with this too.

dubya/ head/posse CREATED the problem that APA failed to abstain from, so became guilty of torture themselves.

US torture policy was created by the government, true. not sure why you're so resistant to assign any blame to doctors and shrinks who participated/supervised.

nope. The docs and shrinks are guilty of participating in torture.

Proof that torture, not just mind-destroying isolation, humiliation, degradation, is still occurring at Gitmo? Obama proposed years ago to close Gitmo, the Repugs blocked it. He's still planning to close Gitmo, and no doubt the Repugs will block him again.

The buck stops with Dumbya. No trickle down blame on this.

As a lib , he's in the unenviable position of having to both semen-shield for a BigGov lobbyist organization and bash the most important person in that same BigGov from the opposing party.

doctors and shrinks particpated, patriots and journalists apologized for it. judges upheld it. good people held their tongues from cowardice. we're still force feeding hunger strikers at Gitmo. we're still detaining people indefintely without due process of law. plenty of blame trickled down, I'd say. Obama's to blame for not putting an end to it like he promised and for countenancing ongoing lawlessness.

there is a class of mental health professionals for torturers. they were developing techniques used along with federal agents. doesn't exactly lead to trust for the industry or the intelligence services. they should purge but its self policing.

in russia psychologist is used to put person in prison hospital.
