Decisions on whether a shot is a two or three-point attempt will be made by offcourt National Basketball Association referees, the league said Wednesday among several modifications to the instant-replay process.

Referees in the Replay Center will also issue rulings on end-of-quarter made field goals, out-of-bounds calls, goaltending and potential shot-clock violations, beginning with the 2015-16 season.

"Many instances in our 15 instant-replay triggers are very straightforward and do not need the involvement of the oncourt game officials to accurately determine the result," Kiki VanDeWeghe, NBA executive vice president of basketball operations, said in a statement.

"Flow of game is crucial to basketball so a quicker result will help our players and coaches return to action faster."

However, all replay reviews will continue to be triggered by the three oncourt referees, the NBA said after modifications to the instant-replay process were approved by the league's board of governors.

Oncourt referees will decide on flagrant and clear-path fouls, player altercations and restricted-area calls while the current standard for overturning a call made on the floor will remain for all instant-replay reviews.

A call is overturned only if there is "clear and conclusive" visual evidence for doing so,

I like it. Keep things moving. Not a bad thing for purposes of entertainment and a slight but maybe trivial advantage to the spurs. No teams sub as much as the spurs and most teams aren't in as good of shape as a collective whole. Less breaks=a more fatigued opponent. I like it

Well... If you're going to get ed then its better not to prolong it. Less painful that way I would imagine

How many times will we hear the words Seacacus, NJ during these replay reviews?

If that means the refs will be updating the score while the game isn't affected, that could be a good thing. But if it means the refs still have to call for a review and wait for the ruling, it's barely a step up.

Just get rid of the refs... Let the players decide the calls..
    Plus..
As much as i love to hear bill and sean commentating, why not have another FSSW where you can just listen to the players talking while playing the game..

Why not just add the four-point line, the ten-point line, skittle mode, and jet packs while we're at it?

That would have helped a lot in Game 6 of the 2013 Finals so that the Spurs could have tried to run the ball up the court after Allen's three instead of stopping the game and letting Miami set up their defense.

The inbounder would have tried to pass it to Leonard, Lebron would have picked it off and the Heat would have had an easy dunk

Most of the two/three point shots are called correctly to begin with, AND the referees know which shots they'd like to take a look at again.

I doubt it matters much to anyone, but I had wondered if the league would identify the officials who are working the replay center on a given night and if those assignments would include some of the "elite" officials who work the later rounds of the playoffs, including the Finals.

The answer to both questions is apparently yes.

This morning's Referee Assignments identify the on-court officials for each of the 3 games tonight as well as 3 officials who are in the Replay Center, including Mike Callahan, who is clearly one of the league's elite officials.

On nights with 10 games I doubt it will be possible to put top referees into the replay center though ... they have to be on the court.

My guess is that there won't be a 1-to-1 correlation with these assignments -- I don't think there will be a replay official for each and every game, so a 10-game night won't likely require 10 officials in the replay center. But, obviously, it would be preferable to have the top officials on the floor and not in the replay center (unless the top official is Ed Malloy . . . .)
