Tristan Thompson failed to pick up the Cavs' $6.8M qualifying offer by the 11:59 p.m. ET deadline, per ESPN and multiple reports. This means that Thompson's holdout has officially begun. #Cavs ed

So how does this work? Can he still sign a QO or does it have to be a new contract?

I assume it must be a new contract. Has this ever happened before?

Apparently he can still sign the QO if Cavs offer it again.

The immediate impact of this is that Thompson is now in a no-man's land of sorts. He can no longer sign the qualifying offer and, unless the Cavs sign him to a one-year deal or he signs an offer sheet that the Cavs choose not to match, he will be a Cavalier for at least two more seasons.

The next move for Thompson is unclear. He now can either sit out, sign an offer sheet with another team or re-sign with the Cavs. Where Thompson to sit out, he in theory could sit out all season and become a restricted free agent again next summer. He also wouldn't be the first Cavalier to hold out at the start of the season, as Anderson Varejao held out until December of the 2007-08 season as a restricted free agent. Varejao ultimately returned to the Cavs after signing an offer sheet with the then Charlotte Bobcats. The Cavs matched the offer sheet a day after Varejao signed it.

Did the Blazers waive Mike Miller so they could make an offer to Tristan?

Don't think the Blazers would be interested, Cavs would match.

Thompson would have been ed being in his current situation if it wasn't for GM LeBron being on his side. I expect he'll be making a couple of calls now and a new contract signed within a week.

So, obviously, TT did not agree with Cavs offer and Griffin did not accept TT's agent Rich Paul deal. But I don't think negotiations are that far fetched. TT didn't accept the 5/80m contract but maybe he accepts a 5/85m.

If that isn't the case, I believe Rich Paul ed it up big time this time.

He actually gets fined every day that he holds out.

    #notagoodtactic
This is not true. Is the opposite, as team and player couldn't reach an agreement, he can't be fined for missing practices/games with the Cavs. He could sit out the entire season if he want to. Other teams have until March to extend an Offer Sheet. Cavs can would match it anyways tho'.

He will sign for a reasonable long term deal eventually. Probably the same 5/80 offer the Cavs threw out the first time. Guy is a monster on the offensive boards and made Gasol look like a . There's value in that. Cavs rather bring someone young with energy off the bench than some 35 year old scrub ringchaser.

Surprising that they are actually holding their ground, tbh..hurts them in the short-term, but he's one of the most overrated players in the league..can't give a max deal to an offensive rebounder in 2015..

LeBron calls the shots in that team in most everything. The fact that they aren't giving Thompson the money he wants tells you that LeBron really doesn't care too much for his game.

I will agree with LeBron, Thompson is overrated.

Nothing to see here. At worst, Lebron will just buy another all-star or use other teams as his farm system by the trade deadline anyways because that's what he does every year.

Wow very interesting. I like Thompson and he's been an ironman all season, but he's limited. All of this could backfire for him badly. No team made him even an Enes Kanter type offer because the Cavs were willing to pay him 80 mill, which is quite possibly more than decent value for him. No one touched him and the Cavs are not forced to compete against themselves. He's going to quite literally put the Cavs in a position to see how well they do without him and it could backfire on him badly. They will miss him, but could do well enough without him to where it depresses TT value from even the 80 mill. If they do well enough without him, then TT is not worth 80 mill even to them. It is a huge gamble.

Its possible TT will not be in a better position for a contract at any other point and R.Paul knows this.

The Cavs will have to earn their way out of the East the way it's looking now.

They could start the season with LeBron and not much else. Kyrie and Iman Shumpert are out until at least Christmas or later, Kevin Love doesn't appear to be ready for the start of the regular season, and now Tristan Thompson could be holding out for awhile.

Cavs haters have to be loving this situation about now.

Yea, in the west you could quite possibly not recover from a lengthy bad start even if you have a good team towards the end of the season. For example, Spurs last season didn't even start horrible, they just skidded in December crumbling over injuries and slipped to 7th spot in the playoff ranks and then were never able to climb up again. You don't feel the same fate awaits the Cavs, but they could skid enough to not have one of the top seeds.

The thing is that TT knows he's valuable to the Cavs and their playing style and the Cavs know TT's value in their lineup. At the end they'll end up paying him a lot of dough. The same will happen with Harrison Barnes and GSW. They'll end overpaying him as he's perfect for them and their small ball.

Not really Who is going to challenge Cleveland in the East? They're still easily the best team in the conference even if they don't have Thompson (which, btw, isn't a given...I still think the most likely outcome is that TT ends up reaching a deal with Cleveland before the season starts). Missing Shumpert for the first few months of the season won't be that big of a deal. Kyrie being out until Christmas is the absolute worst-case scenario; I highly doubt he'll miss more than the first month of the season (if that). Haven't heard about Love lately, but the initial timetable was 4-6 months and that was in April, so I really don't see him missing much time either.

I mean they might get off to a slow start, but people shouldn't get their hopes up that they won't be playing come June. I have a hard time imagining them losing to someone in the East assuming they're even remotely healthy.

the spurs should have been throwing all the Lamarcus jerk-offery to Thompson.

Thompson might just be my new favorite basketball player. the NBA is tyrannical with it's draft scale, restricted free agency, salary cap protect the owners from themselves business. Thompson should leverage a bolt for China or Euro-league to force a trade to Toronto, Minny, or wherever the heck he wants to play. I don't think this is all about money. i think there's a degree of, "why did you bring in Love when you had me" type of thing behind this loud display of knot tying.

Atl, Mil, Chi, Orl, and Bos... and that's downplaying Cha, Tor, and Was.
