Washington PostSlightly more than half of American teenagers, ages 15 to 19, have engaged in oral sex, with females and males reporting similar levels of experience, according to the most comprehensive national survey of sexual behaviors ever released by the federal government. The report today by the National Center for Health Statistics shows that the figure increases to about 70 percent of 18- and 19-year-olds.

"This is a point of major social transition," James Wagoner, president of Advocates for Youth, a reproductive health organization, said yesterday. "The data are now coming out and roiling the idea that boys are the hunters and young girls are the prey. It absolutely defies the stereotype."

The newly released data, gathered in 2002, are sure to stir debate over abstinence-only sex education. Supporters of such programs say they have resulted in young people delaying intercourse, but opponents say they simply have led young people to subs ute other risky behaviors, especially fellatio and cunnilingus. The new data tend to support the latter view, showing that nearly one in four virgin teens has engaged in oral sex.
I've heard that some religious kids are engaging in oral and anal sex as a way of "saving" themselves for marriage. They figure they can do that and still technically be virgins.
Statisticians shouldn't worry though, after these teens are married the 70% number tends to swing the other way.

Actually 70% of 18-19 year olds have.
50% of teens as a whole.
Oddly enough, that same source shows that sexuality is far less prevalent than some would claim. Perhaps social liberals and conservatives should stop wasting so much time on what appears to be a rounding error in our society.
I grew up as an active member of the youth group in a fairly conservative church, and I would say most of us felt it was okay to have oral sex as a subs ute for full-on sex. The justification was always that vaginal sex could get you pregnant.
Of course, anal sex was not even a topic of discussion.
What I also find interesting is that many individuals feel that oral sex is not "sex". The forty-second President of These United States isn't the only one. A lot of women from fundamentalist upbringings I've encountered seem to believe the same thing.
The justifications for that are always amusing.
It's not easy for teens... They grow up hearing mixed messages from peers, parents, schools, churches and entertainment.
Sex (to them) is simultaneously evil, amazing, dangerous, reckless and a rite of passage. It's not surprising that many teens would convince themselves that oral sex is an acceptable compromise.
Adults, on the other hand...
18-19 year olds, eh? Hmmmm...came of age about the time President Clinton was claiming oral sex wasn't sex...imagine that.
ROFL
you idiot
No, he's the idiot.
That's strange. Anal sex was always a topic of discussion in my church. It was always anal sex this and butt sex that.

Funny... I'm talking more about our outside-of-church discussions... Like when we used to go to Hooters after Wednesday Night class.
Well so much for the religious right actually have any power. Glad those puritan pukes aren't having their way.
You really are stupid you know that.
True, oral sex being popular can be traced back to one Bill Clinton.![]()
I've been appreciating it long before I even heard of Clinton.
