It blocks the Russians from Adriatic. It's about the location (land they occupy) not their strength, same as Slovenia.

Is NATO a military alliance or social club? The “North Atlantic” Treaty Organization just invited Montenegro to join. With 2,080 men under arms, Podgorica is a military nullity. Having peacefully separated from Serbia years ago, Montenegro neither threatens nor is threatened by anyone. Adding it to NATO is like ac ulating Facebook Friends. They do little more than allow preening Washington officials to wander the globe gloating how popular the U.S. is.

don't understand the thinking. Adding NATO members blindly basically adds risk to the organization as due to Article 5 they MUST defend all the members. Even if a crazy member like Turkey decides to attack a world power.

An official in Montenegro says unidentified people have burned a NATO flag, just days after the small Balkan nation was invited to join the alliance amid opposition from Russia.

Many in Montenegro, which has strong historic and cultural ties to Russia, remain opposed to NATO membership partly because the alliance bombed the country in 1999 while it was still part of a union with Serbia.
Pro-Russia opposition groups are planning an anti-NATO rally on Saturday. They are demanding a national referendum on the issue.

Have you ever seen the Bay of Kotor? It's beautiful. Great addition to our club.
