    warm up:

Spectacle is part of every political campaign. But in the Republican primary during 2015, the spectacle subsumed the campaign.

It was a year that defied parody, analysis or understanding. Comments that in other years would be fodder for negative ads rocketed candidates to the top of the polls.

Here’s a look at 49 things that Republican candidates actually said in 2015:

Cruz: People who believe in climate science are “flat earthers.” I’m Galileo.

“I believe in following evidence and data. On the global warming alarmists, anyone who actually points to the evidence that disproves their apocalyptical claims, they don’t engage in reasoned debate. What do they do? They scream, ‘You’re a denier!’ They brand you a heretic. Today the global warming alarmists are the equivalent of the flat-earthers. You know it used to be: ‘It is accepted scientific wisdom the Earth is flat.’ And this heretic named Galileo was branded a denier.”

Rubio: Rape victims should be forced to bring their pregnancy to term

Trump: To defeat ISIS, we need to kill more women and children

“We’re fighting a very politically correct war. And the other thing is with the terrorists, you have to take out their families. They, they care about their lives. Don’t kid yourself. But they say they don’t care about their lives. You have to take out their families.”

Carson: The Egyptians built the pyramids to store grain

“[T]he pyramids were made in a way that they had hermetically sealed compartments….You would need that if you were trying to preserve grain for a long period of time.”

Jeb: “ yeah” I would kill baby Hitler

yeah, I would. You gotta step up, man.”
Huckabee: Poor people should be sold into slavery for stealing

Radio host: “It says, if a person steals, they have to pay it back two-fold, four-fold. If they don’t have anything, we’re supposed to take them down and sell them… We indenture them and they have to spend their time not sitting on their stump in a jail cell, they’re supposed to be working off the debt. Wouldn’t that be a better choice?”

Huckabee: “Well, it really would be. Sometimes the best way to deal with a nonviolent criminal behavior is what you just suggested.”

Santorum: I’ve taken on the “ladies of The View.” Therefore, I can defeat ISIS.

Jeb: I’m not sure we should spend half-a-billion on “women’s health issues.”

“The argument against this is, well women’s health issues, you’re attacking, it’s a war on women, and you’re attacking women’s health issues. You could take dollar for dollar, although I’m not sure we need a half a billion dollars for women’s health issues, but if you took dollar for dollar there are many extraordinary fine organizations, community health organizations, that exist to provide quality care for women on wide variety of health issues.”

Cruz: Black Lives Matter protesters are “literally suggesting and embracing and celebrating the murder of police officers.”

“If you look at the Black Lives Matter movement, one of the most disturbing things is more than one of their protests have embraced rabid rhetoric, rabid anti-police language, literally suggesting and embracing and celebrating the murder of police officers. That is disgraceful.”

Carson: Syrian refugees are like “rabid dogs”

“For instance, you know, if there is a rabid dog running around your neighborhood, you’re probably not going to assume something good about that dog, and you’re probably gonna put your children out of the way. Doesn’t mean that you hate all dogs by any stretch of the imagination. By the same token, we have to have in place screening mechanisms that allow us to determine who the mad dogs are, quite frankly.”

Trump: Jews are not going to support me because I don’t want their money

Christie: The United States should reject “orphans under five” coming from Syria

“The fact is that we need appropriate vetting, and I don’t think orphans under five should be admitted into the United States at this point.”

Fiorina to a dog: “President Obama ate one of your cousins”

Cruz: Barack Obama is “the world’s leading financier of radical Islamic terrorism”

“If this deal is consummated, it will make the Obama administration the world’s leading financier of radical Islamic terrorism. Billions of dollars under control of this administration will flow into the hands of jihadists who will use that money to murder Americans, to murder Israelis, to murder Europeans.”

Trump: Mass shootings are inevitable because the people who commit them are “geniuses”

“No matter what you do, you’re gonna have problems. Because you have sick people. They happen to be intelligent. And, you know, they can be sick as and they’re geniuses in a certain way. They are going to be able to break the system.”

Paul: Income inequality is due to rich people “working harder”

“The thing is, income inequality is due to some people working harder and selling more things, so if people voluntarily buy more of your stuff, you’ll have more money. It’s a fallacious notion to say, ‘oh well rich people get more money back in a tax cut.’ If you cut taxes ten percent, ten percent of a million is more than ten percent of $1,000.”

Rubio: Politically, the Paris attacks were a “positive development” because they created a “political advantage” for Republicans

“I obviously am not happy about the events that happened last week in Paris. But I think it’s a positive development that it suddenly has forced Americans to confront more carefully the issue of national security because it is the most important thing a President will do and it is the most important function of the federal government.”

Trump: My fans were right to beat up a Black Lives Matter protester

Maybe he should have been roughed up. It was disgusting what he was doing.”

Jeb: Let’s let in only Christian refugees, screen them by last name

[Y]ou can tell when someone is a Christian in the Middle East… I can promise you that. By name, by where they’re born, their birth certificates. There are ample means by which to know this.”

Trump: The inaccurate, racist murder statistics I tweeted came from a “very credible source.”

“I retweeted somebody that was supposedly an expert and it was also a radio show…It came from sources that are very credible, what can I tell you.

Carson: I’m “still waiting for the evidence” that there is racial bias in policing

“I’m not aware of a lot of cases where a police officer comes up to someone like you and says ‘Hey, I don’t like you. I’m going to shoot you. I’m still waiting for the evidence.

Trump: Megyn Kelly asked me tough questions because she had “blood coming out of her whatever”

Rubio: “God’s rules” should Trump Supreme Court decisions on marriage equality

Cruz: Climate scientists are “cooking the books,” just like Enron

“They’re cooking the books. They’re actually adjusting the numbers. Enron used to do their books the same way.”

Carson: A robber stuck a “gun in my ribs” at Popeyes and I directed them to “the guy behind the counter.”

“I have had a gun held on me when I was in a Popeye’s organization. Guy comes in, put the gun in my ribs. And I just said, ‘I believe that you want the guy behind the counter.'”

Jeb: I won’t offer African-Americans “free stuff” to win their votes

“Our message is one of hope and aspiration. It isn’t one of division and get in line and we’ll take care of you with free stuff.
Our message is one that is uplifting — that says you can achieve earned success.”

Trump: There should be a “a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States”

Carson: Jews could have stopped the Holocaust if Germany didn’t have gun control

German citizens were disarmed by their government in the late 1930s, and by the mid-1940s Hitler’s regime had mercilessly slaughtered six million Jews and numerous others whom they considered inferior … Through a combination of removing guns and disseminating deceitful propaganda, the Nazis were able to carry out their evil intentions with relatively little resistance.”

Trump: Ben Carson has a lot in common with child molesters

Christie: I’m not “relying on any scientists” to inform my views on climate change

“It’s not a crisis. The climate’s been changing forever and it will always change… That’s my feeling. I didn’t say I was relying on any scientists. I don’t see evidence that it’s a crisis.”

Cruz: I Heard The Planned Parenthood Shooter Was A “Transgendered Leftist Activist”

“It’s also been reported that he was registered as an independent and a woman and atransgendered leftist activist. If that’s what he is, I don’t think it’s fair to blame on the rhetoric on the left. This is a murderer.”

Huckabee: Anti-gay clerk Kim Davis reminds me of Abraham Lincoln

“Look, you would have hated Lincoln, because he disregarded the Dred Scott 1857 decision that said black people aren’t fully human. [Lincoln] disregarded [Dred Scott] because he knew it was not operative, that it was not logical.”

Carson: Women who have abortion are like slaveholders

“Think about this. During slavery — and I know that’s one of those words you’re not supposed to say, but I’m saying it. During slavery, a lot of the slaveowners thought that they had the right to do whatever they wanted to that slave. Anything that they chose to do. And, you know, what if the abolitionists had said “I don’t believe in slavery, I think it’s wrong, but you guys do whatever you want to do.” Where would we be?”

Trump: I’d consider dating my daughter if he wasn’t married and her father

“Yeah, she’s really something, and what a beauty, that one. If I weren’t happily married and, ya know, her father …”

Huckabee: MLK Jr. would be “appalled” by the Black Lives Matter movement

Jeb: Planned Parenthood is not “doing women’s health”

“I don’t think Planned Parenthood should actually get a penny because they’re notdoing women’s health issues

Carson: My plan to defeat ISIS is to “make them look like losers”

We’re talking about global jihadists, and their desire is to destroy us and to destroy our way of life. So we have to be saying, how do we make them look like losers? That’s the way they’re able to gather a lot of influence, and I think in order to make them look like losers, we have to destroy their caliphate.

Rubio: The government should shut down mosques and “any place where radicals are being inspired”

“It’s not about closing down mosques. It’s about closing down any place — whether it’s a cafe, a diner, an internet site — any place where radicals are being inspired. The bigger problem we have is our inability to find out where these places are, because we’ve crippled our intelligence programs, both through unauthorized disclosures by a traitor, in Edward Snowden, or by some of the things this president has put in place with the support even of some from my own party to diminish our intelligence capabilities.”

Santorum: I’m more qualified to talk about climate change than The Pope because I’m a politician

Fox News: If he’s not a scientist — and in fact, he does have a degree in chemistry — neither are you? So, I guess the question would be, if he shouldn’t talk about it, should you?
Santorum: Politicians, whether we like it or not, people in government have to make decisions with regard to public policy that affect American workers… I’m saying, what should the pope use his moral authority for? I think there are more pressing problems confronting the earth than climate change.

Trump: Jeb Bush should “should really set the example by speaking English while in the United States.”

“I like Jeb. He’s a nice man. But he should really set the example by speaking English while in the United States.”

Christie: Protests against racism on college campuses are “a product of the president’s own unwillingness and inability to bring people together”

“I think part of this is a product of the president’s own unwillingness and inability to bring people together. When people think justice is not applied evenly and fairly, they take matters into their own hands. The lawlessness that the president has allowed to exist in this country just absolutely strips people of hope. Our administration would stand for the idea that justice is not just a word, but it’s a way of life. Laws will be applied evenly, fairly, and without bias to everyone.”

Trump: I might have put the Japanese in internment camps during WWII

“I would have had to be there at the time to tell you, to give you a proper answer. I certainly hate the concept of it. But I would have had to be there at the time to give you a proper answer. It’s a tough thing. It’s tough. But you know war is tough. And winning is tough. We don’t win anymore. We don’t win wars anymore. We don’t win wars anymore. We’re not a strong country anymore. We’re just so off.”

Carson: Boycott Hollywood to solve the problems in black urban communities

“The idea that disrupting and protesting Bernie Sanders speeches will change what is wrong in America is lunacy. The ‘BlackLivesMatter’ movement is focused on the wrong targets, to the detriment of blacks who would like to see real change and to the benefit of its powerful white liberal funders using the attacks on Sanders for political purposes that mean nothing for the problems that face our community.
Let’s confront the entertainment industry that lines its pockets by glamorizing a life where black men are thugs and our women are trash. Let’s tell them we plan to start talking with our wallets… Straight Outta Compton, #1 in movie theaters, is just the latest example. You only have to watch the trailers.”

Trump: I can’t “wash my hair properly” because of EPA regulations

“I’ll give you one regulation. So I build, and I build a lot of stuff. And I go into areas where they have tremendous water… And you have sinks where the water doesn’t come out… You have showers where I can’t wash my hair properly, it’s a disaster!… It’s true. They [the showerheads] have restrictors put in. The problem is you stay under the shower for five times as long.”

Kasich: Mass shootings the result of loneliness, not guns

“I don’t think gun control would solve this problem. The deeper issue is alienation. The deeper issue is loneliness.”

Trump: We should “absolutely” register all Muslims in a database

Trump on Carly Fiorina: “Look at that face! Would anyone vote for that?”

Look at that face! Would anyone vote for that? Can you imagine that, the face of our next president?! I mean, she’s a woman, and I’m not s’posedta say bad things, but really, folks, come on. Are we serious?”

Fiorina: There is a video of Planned Parenthood harvesting the brain of a living fetus on a table

“I dare Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, to watch these tapes. Watch a fully formed fetus on the table, its heart beating, its legs kicking while someone says, ‘We have to keep it alive to harvest its brain

Trump: We should “strongly consider” shutting down mosques

How to twist headlines enough to distort what was said in order to meet objective.

    Jesus F'N....

    Cruz actually said:

are the equivalent of the flat-earthers. You know it used to be: ‘It is accepted scientific wisdom the Earth is flat.’ And this heretic named Galileo was branded a denier.”

This is pure bs. It was the possibility that the Earth was not the center of everything, it was the possibility that planets orbited the sun, that freaked the Catholic Church out. Cruz would have been right there with the inquisition into Galileo's heretical nature.

I seriously despise this man much more than Trump.

I would vote for Kool before any of these fools. I can't believe people can listen to this and actually be like, "hmmm, which one? they are all so appealing!"

Calling them clowns is an insult to clowns everywhere.

And shame on CNN. The line of questioning is horrendous, like they are speaking another language.
