Messina said politically during those days “you could probably locate me in the socialist area.” But with his family holding moderate views, he eschewed the extremism embraced by so many of his fellow students.

“I was in the progressive area, for sure,” he said, “but the movement, the school atmosphere was pushing you to become more extreme, and I was not attracted to that.”
