Stck a fork in the Red Sox.
Red Sox's Foulke shut down for season
Red Sox right-hander Keith Foulke will not pitch again this season, ESPN's Peter Gammons has confirmed.
The struggling reliever returned to Boston on Thursday for an examination on his left knee, another setback for the World Series champions as they scramble to stay in the playoff race.
A day after falling out of first place in the AL East for the first time since July 18, the Red Sox sent Foulke home from the road trip to see team physician Thomas Gill.
Foulke was a star of Boston's championship run last year, nailing down all four victories in the Series sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals. But he's struggled most of this season, posting a 5-5 record and a 5.91 ERA while saving just 15 of 19 opportunities.
Foulke had arthroscopic surgery on July 7 to repair cartilage in his left knee. He missed two months while recovering, and has not pitched in a save situation since returning from the disabled list Sept. 1.
Foulke last pitched on Sunday against the Oakland Athletics, entering the game when Boston trailed 12-0 and going two scoreless innings.
Curt Schilling took over as the closer July 14 and was 4-3 with a 5.18 ERA as a reliever, saving nine of 11 chances. Since Schilling moved back into the rotation on Aug. 26, Mike Timlin has saved seven of nine opportunities.
But Timlin gave up the lead on Wednesday night, allowing three runs and recording just one out as the Red Sox lost 7-4 to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
The defeat dropped Boston into second place in the division race, a half-game behind the New York Yankees. The Red Sox also trailed the Cleveland Indians by one game in the AL wild-card race heading into Thursday night's games.
Boston was idle -- its first off-day in a month -- before a weekend series with the Baltimore Orioles.
The Red Sox signed Foulke in the wake of their bullpen meltdown in Yankee Stadium in the 2003 playoffs, giving him a contract that could pay him $26.5 million over four seasons. He earned it last year, when he was 5-3 with 32 saves and a 2.17 ERA.
But his on-field struggles this season -- coupled with a personal problem he has alluded to but not described -- have made him cranky and caustic. He was booed off the Fenway mound after giving up a ninth-inning grand slam to Cleveland's Travis Hafner on June 28, then said, "I've always said the hardest thing is to come in here and face my teammates [rather] than worry about Johnny from Burger King booing me."
Foulke also told the San Francisco Chronicle last week that he was moving out of the city to avoid the attention.
"People don't understand there's times when we want to be private," he told the paper. "There's a lot of times people come up and they get in your business. ... It's one of the reasons that for next year I am relocating. I'm moving out of the city so I can be with myself a little more."

Stck a fork in the Red Sox.
pretty much.
That IMO, just made the road to the championship that much easier for the Cardinals.
If the Red Sox are out of the way, who could beat em!??!
The Yankees would smoke the cardinals, but don't count the SOX out.
Are you doing a TPark and jumping off the bandwagon?
When did the Yankees get a starting rotation? The Yankees would smoke the cardinals
Carpenter > Johnson
Mulder > Mussina
Suppan >>>> career minor leaguer
you get past Jeter Arod Sheff and Jorge
Robinson Canoe?
Bernie Williams????
The Yankees Bullpen outside of Rivera is mediocre.
give me a break.
The only team that scares me is the Astros, and their lack of offense pretty much seals up their fate.
Itll be a rematch of the NLCS last year cause Atlanta blows, San Diego is a joke.
Who knows with the American league.
no its called being realistic. Are you doing a TPark and jumping off the bandwagon?
Something Blazer fans havent been in about 12 years.
WGAF whoever scares TPark, he's an idiot at predictions...
Thus.. "I won't be here for one whole year".
TPark lost credibility, just ignore the idiot.
Reality Check.
1st. The Randy Johnson of the past couple of months > Carpenter. Also, Randy Johnson's career puts Carpenters to shame.
2nd. Yankees hit Mulder real hard, always have and probably always will. The only person that used to give them trouble was Hudson.
3rd. Suppan Sucks and is not better than either of the yankees #3 starters at best it's a wash.
4th. It's Jeter, Arod, Sheff, GIAMBI (30HRS Since June),, MATSUI, Bernie, Cano, Posada.
5th. Yankees bullpen is mediocre outside Rivera and Gordon.
No reason to be scared just that either the SOX or Yankees are going to stomp the Mighty Cardinals.
Preach it!![]()
2-0 going 6 or 7 innings in close out games for the Cards last yearSuppan Sucks and is not better than either of the yankees #3 starters
15 wins 3 50 ERA this year
yeah just pathetic.
Get, the, OVER IT ALREADY.WGAF whoever scares TPark, he's an idiot at predictions...
Thus.. "I won't be here for one whole year".
TPark lost credibility, just ignore the idiot.
God move the on, dont like it?? Tough , GET OVER IT.
This is absolutely laughable. The Randy Johnson of the past couple of months > Carpenter
Randy Johnson??
Carpenter has like a 1.70 ERA for the past 2 months.
Does Johnson??? Uhhhhh ok........
lol wtf does that have to do with THIS year.Randy Johnson's career puts Carpenters to shame
Livin in the past, typical Yankee homer.
Also,
go look up Randy Johnson's record and ERA vs the Cardinals in playoff games in 01 and 02 VS the Cardinals.
Jim Edmonds and others absolutely feasted on him....
Especially in 02. THe Cardinals would be DEFINATELY looking forward to seeing him...
So take your Yankee homerism somewhere else.
I can say that Carpenter is a stud, and may end up being the best postseason pitcher.
But with the likes of postseason veteran John Smoltz in the mix, that may not be case.
I would look forward if the cards and braves met in the postseason and see some classic duels between Carpenter and Smoltz.
It's called 26 World Championships and consistently in the mix for another. When the cardinals do something let me know, talk about homerism.
but just like all the other teams who never do anything, you sure can talk a good game.
when the cardinals do something??
WTF are you talking about.
what do you want them to do.
They are second all time in baseball World Championships.
They have won the division 3 out of the last 4 years.
Classic.
Typical Yankee fan, thinks there is noting west of the Hudson river.
Injuries could get in the way of the Cards. I love them as much as you, but realistically, they're banged up, and will be thru the end of the year.
Rolen's out for the year. Walker is banged up and old. Sanders just came back from a broken leg.
A juggernaut offense to start the year is now relying on Nunez, John Rodriguez, and So Taguchi to score runs. Pujols and Edmonds are still there, but their offense went cold in the World Series. I don't think Taguchi, Rodriguez, and Nunez are the cure to that. Their pitching is head and shoulders above what it was last year, but they still need to score runs.
How many rings do they have compared to the Yanks since 1990? , the ing Marlins have more rings than the Cards over the past 15 years.
King,
while true, John Rodriguez will not be relied on, Walker will play the full time in the playoffs, and lately has been hitting over 300 so be good to go.
Rolen wasnt do before he got hurt, Nunez is pretty solid, good defensively, good bat, so I dont mind it.
So Taguchi??? Hitting 300 9 homers and over 65 RBIs, ill take that out of my 4th outfielder any day.
Reggie is getting back in the swing of things.
Cardinals IMO will instill more hit and runs, and play small ball and rely on the good pitching.
They IMO are better off this year than last.
they are actually tied for 2nd all time with the A's, add them both together and they still come way short of the Yankees. Of course neither team has won one in a long time so what does it matter. They are second all time in baseball World Championships.
