I heard somebody mention this place today and it took me back to my youth.
Or was this store a mid-west thing..I grew up in Ohio.
Just wondering. I used to get my albums and Jovan Musk there.
I grew up in Ohio and I've never heard of it.
I'm from Oklahoma & I've never heard of it.
We didn't have that particular store, but our five and dime was SS Kresge or something like that--pre K-Mart, if I recall correctly. I mean I think they grew into the K-Mart chain. Ours was located in the old part of downtown, and by the time I started having disposable income (allowance), I was more interested in the mall! I guess they were pretty popular at one time.
SH Kress. We had one in my hometown too.
Here is a link....

Thanks, 2Blonde! I think this is the one I had in my hometown, but we are going way back now! I just remember it was OLD when I was a kid, but I will never forget the creaky wooden floors.
Does anyone remember Winnies?
I remember Winn's here in SA. They went bankrupt about 17 years ago, I think.
Remember BEST?
They use to have the best icee's in the world
I remember BEST! It was so weird how you "ordered" your stuff. I never quite understood their concept. Guess no one else did, either.![]()
I just looked at your profile. You're younger than me.So please don't call yourself old.
I NEVER call myself old--the store was old when I was a kid! People in their 50's and 60's are so young still--when you get to be our age!
The best is yet to come!![]()
I remember them too! Wasn't Service Merchandise the same idea? And then there was Gemco, but that may have been a CA store only.
I'll take that as a no.![]()
Oh, and I remember Kress too..but we pronounced it "Kress".
I remember Winns, and Woolco and Woolworths. All very cool if you were a kid.
Remember The Sizzler steak house and Luther's BBQ where 35 and walzem are?
No..but I remember eating at Burger Chef and Big Boy.
I do...as well as the Sizzler where Tom's Ribs on Vance Jackson and 410 is now as well as the one on Bandera and 410 where the IHOP is now.Remember The Sizzler steak house and Luther's BBQ where 35 and walzem are?
Damn...Burger Chef...nice.
Joe..remember First Mate?
We had Woolco and Woolworths in Phoenix too.
And before it was BEST, it was LaBelle's in Phoenix - same concept .. going into the store but ordering it. Weird system.
It was a weird system. And I think atBEST, there were some items that you didn't have to fill out that stupid form for.
How exciting it was to see your purchase come down that ramp!
They took a 15 minute shopping experience and turned it into an hour![]()
