Aubrey McClendon, a founder and former chief executive of Chesapeake Energy, died in a car crash Wednesday at age 56.

This is breaking news. Please check back for updates.

McClendon was indicted Tuesday and charged with conspiring to rig bids for oil and natural gas leases while leading Chesapeake Energy.

The alleged conspiracy took place between December 2007 and March 2012, the indictment said. The companies are accused of deciding who would win the bids, then giving an interest in the leases to the other company. The Justice Department did not say which other company it believes was involved in the alleged scheme.

"Anyone who knows me, my business record and the industry in which I have worked for 35 years, knows that I could not be guilty of violating any an rust laws," McClendon said in a statement Tuesday.
McClendon stepped down from the company, which he co-founded, in 2013. McClendon founded American Energy Partners and served as its chief executive.

McClendon was also a part owner of the National Basketball Association's Oklahoma City Thunder. The team plays its home games at Chesapeake Energy Arena.

McClendon was a graduate of Duke University.

Before the news, Chesapeake shares had climbed more than 20 percent Wednesday.

They're saying he drove his car into a wall at high speed, so I'm thinking suicide or he was really drunk.

Not really. Actually I would expect something like this from a weak-willed person who wanted to short-cut his way to extreme success and now can't take the consequences of his willful actions.

He decided death before becoming a prison .

    -puts on tinfoil hat

Everyone is saying suicide. But his hearing was going to be today and he was looking at 10 years in federal prison. He was probably willing to rat out a lot of people to get his sentenced reduced. These are powerful people who have a lot to lose too.

Old Kobe was lookin' at 20 behind the wall. His old man had a Lear on the tarmac at LAX. Didn't need a passport. Just get it in the air.

Kobe: "No, pops, I got this." Reached over, took the choker collar offin' lawyer and turned her loose in Eagle. Lord-a-mercy.

The charges were dropped because of the civil suit. What exactly did his lawyer do to make the accuser sue him for money?
