With training camp scheduled to start next week, the Milwaukee Bucks signed guard Andre Barrett and forward Tommy Smith to free-agent contracts on Tuesday.

Barrett, a 5-foot-10 point guard from Seton Hall, played in 38 games last season for the Houston Rockets and Orlando Magic. He averaged 3.8 points and 1.8 assists as a National Basketball Association rookie.

In 11 games with Orlando, Barrett served as a backup to veteran Steve Francis and averaged 5.6 points in 15.4 minutes.

Barrett played with the San Antonio Spurs' summer league team in the 2005 Rocky Mountain Revue.

Smith, a 6-10, 215-pound forward, played last season with the Yakima Sun Kings of the Continental Basketball Association. He averaged 13.4 points and 6.0 rebounds in 14 games.

Smith, who played at Arizona State, was chosen by the Chicago Bulls in the second round of the 2003 draft (53rd overall selection). He was released by the Bulls after spending the first 28 games of the 2003-'04 season on the injured list.

The Bucks open training camp Tuesday at the Cousins Center in St. Francis, the first day NBA teams are allowed to practice for the 2005-'06 season.

Milwaukee will play eight exhibition games, opening Oct. 12 at Minnesota. The Bucks have three exhibition home games, Oct. 15 against Cleveland and Oct. 22 against Minnesota, both at the Bradley Center, and Oct. 19 vs. Detroit at the Resch Center in Green Bay.

Tommy freakin' Smith. All the potential in the world, but like Loren Woods is mentally inable to just get "it". Sad. Both could dominate if they wanted to. They just don't seem to care.

Tommy Smith had a bad back injury in the CBA last season, so it's good to see him back playing well enough to get invited to camp (I'm assuming these are only partially guaranteed contracts).
