    From NBA.COM chat w/ Coach D'Antoni:

"The Spurs will need to be one of many teams we will have to be better than to reach our main goal, which is to win the NBA Championship."

    "One of the many"???

Is it me, or does it still seem like he's in denial about the Spurs dominance over the Suns?

I would be ok if he said, "one of the teams", but to add "many" to that list, he's basically saying the Spurs are really not much better than most of the teams.

    Anyone else think the same?

why put a team that embarrassed you so badly in the wcf's last year on such a high pedistool? He wants his players hungry, and confident that the Spurs arent such a huge obstacle to overcome, no more of an obstacle than any other legitimate team in the league

All the great championship teams(Lakers & Spurs) have always had respect for the previous champion. Shaq had gone on record saying, "Spurs are the team to beat...they were the champions", just as Popovich & the Spurs have also said, "Lakers are the team to beat because they are the champions".

No shame in giving props and respecting a rival.

Spurs even said "Detroit is the team to beat, they were the champions".

But according to D'Antoni, "Spurs are one of the many teams" they have to be better than.

I'm sure this is floating in the back of the Spurs minds and they may not take the Suns so lightly like they did last year. Look for a sweep of the Suns

I think many of you guys overreact to anything D'Antoni says.

The fact that he mentions the Spurs both this year and last by name as the team they are gunning for is nothing but respect for the Spurs.

That whole organization is whack. Telling Mike Finley "Too bad you missed out on your chance to win" when he obviously took his BEST chance to win. They're a bunch of tools that were dismissed 4-1 and got worse.

I think this was meant from the Suns' perspective. Saying "one of the many" means he thinks there are several teams right now that are better than Phx- not who is better or as good as the Spurs.

Ummm...the Spurs are one of many teams they'll have to beat...you don't even make the playoffs in the West unless you win at least 50-odd games.

I think he's saying the problem is that opposing teams/coaches aren't saying something like "we're all playing for second place this year."

    Penis envy.

He still has a cramp in his ovaries after losing Finley.

Also he got his ass kicked last season. That never leaves a good taste in one's mouth.

Which is why he told Michael Finley, "I'm sorry you're going to miss out on a championship"?

What do you think opposing coaches/players should say? If you think the Spurs are going to break the Bulls record for wins and just roll to a le, you're going to be in for a surprise. There are plenty of challengers out there.

Whoever started this thread ... turned Coach D's words around. All the Suns have is respect for the Spurs..Evertime the Suns try to say something nice someone finds something negative in it..just take the compliment and get over it...

and besides i have yet to hear a compliment towards the Suns team!! (please notice i said team not player..but hey we don't deserve the respect the Spurs do until we win.

Exactly. The impression I first got when I read that is that he's saying the Suns suck cause there's a lot of teams better than them

No shame in giving props and respecting a rival.!

You must be a bandwaggoner if you think the Lakers have always had respect fro the previous champion...

And I can't believe you put the Lakers over as being classy, while what D'antoni said bothers you...

Would you have been happier if D'antoni had come out and said, "We are the Spurs shank-ass es, and have no hope of ever beating them"

    D'antoni said nothing incendiary...

But you seriously need to brush up on your Lakers and Shaq history.
